Just picked this up today, exactly the same as my 2nd ever mtb bought 31 years ago. I won’t be putting a 150mm stem and 580mm bars on it tho…

No, because it looks like it’s already got a 150mm stem and 580 bars? Pfftt. 😉

I hope your nostalgia trip is a fun one. 😃

    135mm I think…but my 1st one had a flat one! Cheers.

’88 rockhopper, Nice. I’ve just been trawling eBay for an ’89 or ’90 stumpy.

Love the retro colour scheme too.👍

Did you get it off eBay mate?

Yup, eBay, pick up only and 300 miles from me. Been up for 6 months or so! I wasn’t desperate for one but I reckoned it was the best opportunity I’d be likely to see…

I had a search running for 2 years IIRC. I don’t exactly need another bike but thought I’d give it a bash and do the odd dry ride/retro race…

    Just ridden it.

My arms hurt and it is frightening downhill.

Canti front and U-brake rear,I am surprised any of us survived the 90s 🙂

It still feels weird being able to brake with one finger rather than all fingers of both hands pulling as hard as possible

Also my first MTB. Really terrible brake on the rear. Does it have the flexi plastic levers?

I taco’d the front wheel on a steep loose flint downhill soon after I got mine. Exciting!

It did many years’ service as a commuter before it finally fell to bits.

So, if you rotate the rings round 45′ they’ll be all modern and “oval”, no?

Biopace is approx 90° out, closest you can do it’s 72.5°

Plastic levers were on the cheaper bikes, Rockhopper only I think.

The braking really is scary, though I know it can be better. It still is basically pulling with 4 fingers as hard as you can to slow down a bit vs stoppies with 1 finger these days.

I replaced the canti’s on my Marin for v brakes. Much better. Looks like your stuck with that u brake on the back though although maybe you can get some better pads.

How does the frame ride? Is it harsh or forgiving like mine.

It’s staying as is, it’s not about the ride! Which is a bit harsh…
