Hi, I’m doing some work on my mum’s bike that is an older dawes- she wanted shifters on the bars, so I put some grip shifters on. However the shifting is now extremely hard- I can barely shift it, let alone my mum

I think the friction is from the old style rear deraileur- it looks like this;

And so I want to change it for a new one. However, it is connected to the axle nut as shown. Is there a replacement part I can buy with a threaded hole that will allow the fitting of a new mech?

I have no idea what that is or how much it cost new but it looks lovely. That curve around the top jockey wheel is cool as is the ‘S’ on the hanger bit.

You should be able to buy a hanger very similar but with a threaded hole for a regular mech. £3 or so.

And yes that mech would never work with gripshift as it pre-dates indexing.

You’ll need a new cable and compression-free outer also.
