Strikes me, as I’ve just listened to biosphere and Ivan drever, that there is some pretty obscure music out there.

    So. Any genre, anything.

    what’s your favourites?

What is “obscure”? Stuff that’s not played on the radio?
I’ve heard of Biosphere, so that’s not particularly obscure.

Sorry, but its a word that bugs me about music these days!
Go on Bandcamp.com – how many artists have you heard of on there? Are they all “obscure”?
Then you get people calling you pretentious for like ‘obscure’ music!
I don’t even know what it is! ARGH. I’ve disappeared up my own arse again.
ps. I like the new Octa Push album.

VHS Head – Trademark Ribbons of Gold

Tasters available on youtube. It is one I always mention, but it is just awesome (and a little bit mental).

You know what mainstream is? stuff that isn’t that.

I couldn’t be arsed to think of a better word than obscure.

    How about “little known”?

I’ll admit that biosphere isn’t exactly obscure.

Dunno if it counts, but Shame by Brad was (is) an amazing album, which does not get much of a mention.

Ok, it’s not the word ‘obscure’, but the concept. There is SO MUCH music out there, mainstream (I’m guessing radio airplay stuff?) is a such teeny tiny portion of it.
I get the Juno Records weekly mailouts and have only heard of about 10 artists out of all the weekly releases.

Another answer – Paul White – March of the Ants

(you can ignore the ranty bit and just read the answer if you want 🙂 )

See there: Amon Tobin. Is he obscure to you? Cos he’s been played on the radio loads! (Great album btw)

Which radio station ? If you mean 6 music, then it’s listener figures suggest it’s still pretty small when you put it next to, say Radio 2 (not trying to pick a fight there DezB). 🙂

Kind of surprised people have heard of him, although he has got bigger over the past couple of years.

My mum won’t have a clue who he is, if we’re using that as a sort of sliding scale for obscure.

    Exactly!

I had amon’s first album when it was released . He was fairly obscure then. Excellent choice by the way.

    Maybe he’s half obscure.

And all your picks of 2013 are obscure to me. Mind you that might be because I’m getting old and don’t know what’s cool any more. Not that I ever knew what was cool in the first place…

It’s All Done By Mirrors, by The Astronauts.

Unclassifiable genius, but here goes nothing…..

The wonderful sense of freedom of the free festival movement meets the harsh reality of establishment hatred filtered through paranoia and the easy availability of hard drugs.

Reminds me of dozing in fields to the sound of old diesel engines.

    Hope you’re ok Mark.

Ride the Fader by Chavez is fantastic. Think I’ve met one other person with a copy.

Gone Glimmering is also great, but marginally weaker.

They ‘reformed’ a couple of years ago and were rumoured to be in the studio, but nothing’s transpired yet…
