Is Strava becoming a bit too Facebook now?

Judging by some of the comments on this thread we should all be trying to make our feeds more like the Louvre

I make commutes private. Nobody needs to see shit loads of flat trips up and down the Chester Greenway.

Yeah I probably should do that but I tend to only actually log onto Strava when I do a “proper ride” now thatmy fancy Garmin watch does it all for me.

If there’s one thing I’d change about Strava it’s removing Kudos all together. Just tell me how awesome I am by writing “you’re awesome” as a comment. I don’t ride for Likes.

So is there a reason why you haven’t been arsed to turn on making everything  private by default?

Get over yourself, the way you do things isn’t the correct way for everyone.

I’m a member of my local Tri Club which is pretty large and so I see all sorts on my feed- rides, runs, swims, weights sessions and indoor or outdoor, road/trail versions of all of them.

I actually quite like it and it motivates me to get out and do more of those things myself, which I thought was kind of the point of Strava- or it is for me, anyway.

This forum trends towards “serious cyclist” (no comment) which seems to be reflected in these sorts of Strava threads whenever they arise- but I don’t recall Strava being aimed solely at cycling purists or people who only care about 5hour bike rides. Surely it’s for any sort of physical activity.

    Not really.

In fact last year I decided to set my Strava to private, just to track my own stuff. I get a feeling now that everyone thinks I am lying when I say I’ve done some exercise!

I don’t understand any of this. What possible difference does it make to anyone here what anyone posts on Strava and what they do or don’t give kudos to? If you don’t want to give kudos to a particular (or any) activity, don’t do it. If someone else does how does it affect you? If people are posting activities that you think are no interest to you or not worth posting…. don’t follow them.

I only give kudos for more than normal if that makes sense, so if someone does 10hours on a turbo, then yes that gets kudos, but 10miles outside doesn’t. Unless there is something special about that ride.

I don’t think Strava would ever default to private, they’ve more or less admitted they have s commercial relationship with Zwift haven’t they? hence why you can’t mute the endless meaningless bloody squiggles filling up the feed.

I think the original comment/article was pretty tongue in cheek though, I don’t believe anyone really gets upset about it either way. A lot of the activities you see are people’s fitness watches auto-uploading, I doubt my old boss really knows or cares that I see his lunchtime walk to Tesco every afternoon 🙄

So is there a reason why you haven’t been arsed to turn on making everything  private by default? It’s literally a one-time 5 or 6 button presses. Then you can just make public the stuff that people might actually like to see.

it’s not a case of can’t be arsed. My view is that Strava is primarily for me to look at my fitness. If others who I know wish to view it or encourage that’s entirely up to them.

    your comment that you

tend to only follow people who curate their feeds. If you air your chaff exercise in public, you are a knob and are jettisoned from my feed.

really is quite bizarre. I am glad that we don’t follow each other.

Don’t worry – never gonna happen!

I know people who just use Strava as a place to collect their exercise data….to do whatever you do with exercise data. Their watch auto uploads every time they record something and they seldom actual go on to see it. You can tell these people as the titles of their exercise is the default one strava gives it and they never write any notes. This is actually me 99% of the time too. But every now and then I’ll do something that might just possibly be mildly interesting to someone who knows me – and I like to reciprocate and look at friends more interesting events too. I’ll add a note or two, upload a photo from the ride/paddle/ski whatever and make it public. Otherwise by default it’s set to ‘only me’. It took me, oh I don’t know, 20 seconds to set all my feed to ‘only me’ a number of years ago to make this possible.

Once you know this is possible (and so easy), to not do, is a bit like those people who post a photo of every single meal they eat like they think anyone would give a ****. You are making the conscious decision that everyone who knows you wants to know about your 400m swim in their feed. The equivalent of a photo of your beans on toast without context or comment.

The analogy does break down a bit – in Facebook to post a photo of your beans on you actually have to post it. In strava, you have to spend that 20 seconds (once) changing the default settings……and know it’s possible….and care. Also – if you are logging stuff for a challenge it can’t be set to ‘only you’. Strava does have a ‘mute’ option which is pretty good as the activity remains public on your page and works for challenges but does not get put into people or your club’s feed. Only snag is you have to mute the activity each and every time which is never going to happen. So my issue you is as much with the platform as it is with the users.

However – I still think it’s knobish to know you don’t need to clutter people’s feeds with gash and still elect to do it. That or you’ve got no actual friends interested enough in what you do to follow you, in which case it doesn’t really matter.

    I don’t, but it’s not in a judgy way.

I just think of the Kudos function as a “that looks cool” thing, and indoor activities never look cool.

Why does any of this matter? After all, you choose who you want to follow – nobody is forcing “you” to follow anyone who has “objectionable” Strava activities! Just unfollow them – simple!

My activities are private by default and I record all sorts of shite because they count to annual targets I’ve set myself for self-motivation purposes. I choose to make certain “dull” activities visible to the tiny amount of my followers, mostly cos Mrs Vlad likes to see photos of our dog out walking but I’m also in “quite competition” with a few of my old buddies who I rarely see anymore. I can’t speak for them, but seeing their activities, even dull ones, helps my motivation – maybe it’s reciprocal?

Strava ‘could be’ a brilliant advert fee way of keeping up with what people you know are up to

Gonna start adding pub crawls to mine then.

Why is everyone getting so het up? If you want to add kudos, add kudos. If not, then don’t. If you find someone is posting too much what you think is chaff, unfollow them.

I follow people who I know, and will give them kudos for stuff that I know is contributing to their goals – so late night indoor training for the marmotte – yes. Recovery dog the next day – yes. Swim in the pool for my mate who is trying a tri – yes. Mate who i haven’t seen for a while cos he’s not riding much, but is obvs doing hikes for Jan – yes

    Chillax people…..

Never heard of it until recently until some mates starting giving it to me. Why FFS. It’s my usual 10 mile commute that takes nearly an hour. Hardly worth saying well done for. Maybe , “You fat old git might be better”.

It’s just yet another modern fad where everyone has to be special. Twaddle

I only give kudos for more than normal if that makes sense,

Occasionally I do the reverse. A friend (super strong rider, many long/fast/hilly rides, many KOMs) will occasionally post a 1/2 mile ride to the beach or something so everyone piles on with kudos and deliberately OTT comments.

Awesome ride mate, you’ll have to let us know your nutrition and training tips!

Epic ride, smashed it out the park!

He gets more kudos and comments on those ones than he does on yet another sub-4hr, 80-mile smashfest.

    Me not too.

Only for MTB rides. Cos that’s all I think is worth a high five.

All mine are set to Private default and I change only my mtb rides to Followers. No one wants to see my daily commutes. If Strava had an option to only store certain things I’d use it. Getting kudos is quite nice too.

Garmin connect has all the good stuff and raw data. Stats Stats Stats.

I am generous with it. Anyone breaking into a sweat by voluntarily undertaking a physical activity in their free time is streets ahead of most of the population sat on their arses watching telly.  It’s easy to forget that on here, or if you are uber athletic and only mix with very fit people irl. For a lot of us, it’s a bit of an effort! So a virtual “good effort mate”  can be a bit of a boost. Costs nowt and is easy to ignore by those that think it’s twee.  Most of my less than super fit mates and family seem to appreciate it.

When I first saw the title of this thread I thought to myself ‘do people not have more to worry about than whether or not to give somebody kudos’. Then I read peoples replies and I’m openly disgusted about how many of you think it’s okay to judge people and decide whether their activity is deemed good enough to earn your recognition or not. I’m tempted to sign up for a completely different platform just so I don’t have to be anywhere near that level of god complex. If anybody follows me and gets annoyed by my dog walks or heaven forbid occasional ebike rides feel free to stop following me because I think my life would be so much better without you!

Do you know if anyone actually looks at your activity. Auto kudos has put me off along with all the challenges getting easier.  Strava just links to Veloviewer and I am happy, also decided to cancel subscription.

(Yes, I know some people take Strava too seriously).

Yes they do seem to don’t they? 😮

Not only do I not give kudos for indoor rides and the like – I tend to only follow people who curate their feeds. If you air your chaff exercise in public, you are a knob and are jettisoned from my feed. Filling other people’s feed with your indoor rides, commutes to work, or 1km walk from the hotel to the cafe is only one step better than coughing up phlegm and showing the contents of your hanky to someone.

I guess I never realised people take some things so seriously that I see as a bit of a fun.

It’s my usual 10 mile commute that takes nearly an hour. Hardly worth saying well done for.

Find it difficult to believe, if you do that 5 days a week all year round,  that you never have days where it’s just a massive chore, riding home in the dark, in the cold, getting rained on, legs tired, cars close passing you, after a stressful day at work? If that’s nothing but water off a ducks back to you… are you a machine? It doesn’t ever leave you too tired for things you actually enjoy? Pah, well, we all have different capabilities, but still, I’m grateful that I’m more able than many people.

    Always.
Effort is effort, no matter how you did it.
Me, and many of my mates are seafarers, so half of our life means gym based rides or runs.

I give kudos moslty to people who post nice piccies regardless of how hard or easy the ride/walk/run was. Also if they come up with an amusing title. And particularly if the activity features a particularly happy-looking dog frolicking in the snow.

Sometimes I just click the little thumb thing because it’s a mate who’s not been out for a while and I’m pleased to see them doing stuff.

I’m not arrogant enough to think people are fascinated by my rides indoor or out. The whole thing of making stuff ‘private’ unless it’s ‘K2 without supplementary oxygen in winter’ mystifies me, but most I use Strava to keep track of my own riding and see what more distant mates are up to.

I don’t really care about kudos one way or another tbh. I see it as a sort of casual, virtual ‘nice one’ thing rather than an expression of undying admiration and awe at the sheer splendour of someone’s upload, which is probably where things get a bit tangled. YMMV.

    This…..

I follow people who Strava dog walks, I never do, but if I get to see a pic of a dog they will get some kudos, it is also a quirk of them, the person I am friends with, which is why I follow them. Why would I think they are filling “my feed” with trash.

I did think of another category I never given  Kudos for and that’s the few Pro cyclists I follow, don’t know why.

I would also add that I never even look at who or how much kudos I get on rides, I really don’t think giving or recieving it is worth getting bothered about.

Depends on the type of dog, lurcher, greyhounds and whippets always get kudos, French Bulldogs can do one ?
