Suggest some brands of some good waterproofs that do not shout ‘mountain climber’ at you.

Lovin the Uber coat – A “Highly technical autumn and
early winter coat”. At 500 quid they could bundle a string vest in with the price and extend its usage through winter into early spring. Oh hang on I get it – these things can’t last more than one season lest Anna Wintour catches you and flushes your head down the bog.

    Nice coat though.

Depends what you’re after, Mackintosh, Burberry, Crombie and loads of others ave been doing this for a while. DrizaBone and Barbour for the wax jacket, Musto for the sailing, horsey and shooting set. Ralph Lauren and London Fog for Americans, Timberland, Coulumbia and others for just being outside. My Northern Divers drysuit keeps me both warm and dry, and doesn’t shout “Mountain Climber”.

USAF APECS Goretex parka. Anything from around $80 on eBay to £230 through retailers.

Look at Urban Rider in Putney for relatively reasonably priced Belstaff motorbike jackets.
They did have 2011/12 jackets in earlier this year for about £100 less than the current range.

Some of the Merrell stuff is quite urban but made with tech fabrics.

Flexothane, best accompanied with some baler twine to complete the look.

    The North Face?

It’s just a high street fashion brand these days…

Saw this Kathmandu jacket a few weeks back – photo doesn’t really do it justice, it looks and feels way closer to a regular coat than a proper waterproof.

This Craghoppers one is pretty subtle too, cheap for goretex as well.

Engelbert Strauss might be worth a look for the utilitarian cheaper end of the market.
I use them for my chainsaw stuff

Barbour FTW. Except when the wax wears off a bit and it tips it down, then I would cheerfully swap mine for my issue goretex. Or in fact _any_ goretex jacket.

Done that many a time in the 10 or so years I’ve had mine… It just never seems to get back that essential waterproof-ness.

How about a ski/snowboard jacket, or would that still be too “outdoory” ??

    There’s this:

    10,000mm waterproof/breathable..

Merrell do some lovely technical jackets that don’t look like you’re got lost between the car park and the tea-room in Keswick. As do Carhartt
