The daughter has a 2016 Nissan Juke that has developed a screeching through the speakers when she plays the radio so she took it to the local Nissan dealer today to get a price for a new head unit which includes radio/ sat nav and reversing camera screen.
So how much do we all think she was quoted?

£3279 + £130 fitting. It was also £150 for them to diagnose it was faulty. Car isn’t worth much more than that!

Again, is it just the radio? Ie, what about media via Bluetooth / USB etc?

Does it get louder with the volume control? Engine speed? All speakers?

Alternatively, if she is going to be keeping the car for a while and enjoys her music etc maybe just go for an aftermarket unit with Carplay/Android Auto. However, I’d be going with what Cougar says and get a second opinion before doing anything else, any car stereo specialists near you?

Is the screeching coming from the head unit, or is it a bad connection somewhere? Surely you can get an aftermarket unit. That’s one thing that puts me off about new cars: all the integrated tech. Bring back the days of universal standards and a couple of knobs on the radio.

Honestly, I’m not surprised at the cost, it’s what happens with fully integrated infotainment systems. Just take a look at the systems installed in current Mercedes cars, where the dash consists of two almost full-width screens carrying all of the cars’ systems, and ask yourself what happens if it fails, and just how do you replace it.

I know what happens when it fails, the car is undrivable – you have no information about speed or any driver aids at all, let alone navigation or anything like that. It happened to an eighteen month old A-Class as it left our QC after body and paint restoration, resulting in the car being taken to a dealer on a transporter.
Good thing the warranty was still valid…

Shes going to bring it over to my local garage  ( she’s a couple of hours away that’s why she went to the Nissan dealer ) who are going to have a look at it and they are going to get her a second hand unit as per eBay link if it needs one.
The screeching is coming from the speakers but Nissan say it’s the head unit, the lads at my garage are going to check that it is faulty.

There are specialists that repair them. I found a place in New Mills near Stockport that did a bloke I know Skoda one. Main dealer just said replace for a couple of grand, repair place put a new hard drive in for 125 quid.

It’s probably just the.speaker that wants replacing if it’s only on one channel.

Oe head units are always insane on price.

A quick and easy check would be to use L-R balance and F-R fade to see if it is screeching through all speakers

Quick update. Apparently the audio doesn’t even have to be on for it to make the static sound and the volume makes no difference. It moves around the speakers. An audio specialist checked it last year and said it’s not the speakers.
Think they will probably end up getting a second hand head unit fitted.

It’ll be a resistor or something on the circuit board where the connection is bad

Mk8 civics with the sat nav head unit were notorious for it.

Trick is knowing which one.

A quick check of ebay shows head units available for £150 ish, it will be plug and play so easy enough to install yourself.

Fair point that it may need coding but that’s £160 ish (based on the amount to diagnose the fault). That’s £350 odd compared tp £3200 plus fitting.
