  • Newer generation Wahoo TickR HRMs – not as good?

Sorry, this could equally well belong in any of the training threads but wasn’t sure which one.

My old faithful V1 Tickr died a few weeks ago (corroded through the wee connector stud, 100% my fault). Couldn’t find a replacement strap but Wahoo very generously gave me a discount on a new TickR.

The new TickR arrived and lasted about 5 minutes until the battery cover popped off, the little tabs which hold it on had all broken, a common issue apparently. Wahoo immediately sent me a new one, virtually no questions asked, so top customer service again.

This one is physically fine but just seems a bit flakey compared to my V1, quite often I’ll look down and it’s reporting almost resting heart rate, something I initially put down to my Garmin going into sleep mode but it was doing it last night on the turbo as well. It also doesn’t seem to read very high but that might just be my current condition e.g. I did some reasonably intense efforts at the end of my Z2 last night and it barely ticked over 165BPM which is sort of my sweetspot HR. Just intuitively I don’t really trust what it’s telling me.

Worth upgrading to a Polar or something?

If its only the strap on your V1 thats broken not the pod, you could just get generic replacement strap?

Yes, the Tickr V2 is renowned for being less reliable ( in terms of connection stability and reading accuracy) and more prone to breaking than the V1. When my V1 dies I’ll be getting a Garmin or Polar instead of  a Tickr V2.

OK, so it’s not just me at least. Shame as I gave the old head unit away to somebody in my club, could have experimented with generic straps.

The new TickR only ‘cost’ me £25 so I’ll keep going with it until I start getting more specific with my workouts, at least with the turbo (less so the rollers) I can use virtual power which would at least be no less accurate than heart rate (too cheap for a proper power meter!).

Oops, another V2 fall-apart, I must have got all of 6 hours out of this one.

Shame they seem to have mucked up the design so badly for the sake of what, making it 1mm or so slimmer?

    Or just cost cutting? 🙄
