Batteries are lasting better than first thought, theres even a market in second hand and repurposed ones that are outlasting the cars.

Prices come down with scale and thats part of the issue manufacturers have that and not knowing how to say to customers that elec is better than something they make a lot of money from. Tesla makes the best cars because they don’t have to fit their cars into a petrol line up.

Having said that take a look at the latest Ren Zoe, Hyundai Ioniq, Bmw i3 or the dozens of new hybrids from VW, BMW

All very capable cars and no longer that new these are second, third or even fourth gen.

hybrid sounds great when its new – i can just imagine the cost of repairing one when a solder joint goes dry in the charging circuit.

ive seen the mess local garage mechanics who like changing wheel bearings and tires make of electrical repairs.

and FWIW im not against electric vehicles ESP for city use. I built an electric xtracycle for my city travel as more often than not it was just me and a few bags going in and out of town BUT i did not want to arrive sweaty and in cycling clothes.

I recently bought a Nissan Leaf electric car.
Bit of a squeeze to get a bike in the back, but it will fit with front wheel off.

Look at a one year old used model. I bought a top of the range Tecna with all the toys for £12,500.
4,000 miles from new, full warranty etc. Just like a new car.

Excellent, wouldn’t go back to a petrol or diesel car.
Had a charge point installed at home, there is a Nissan and government grant for this , cost £95 to have the 7kw charger.

No road tax, quiet, drives extremely well, best car I have had ever.

Get a veg oil burning 4×4 and out green the electric brigade. No problems with getting the bikes in the back, great driving position, and using recycled veg oil. Don’t forget that they are an absolute joy to drive.

my 200tdi does sterling job on 80 veg /20 diesel in the summer but in winter in scotland it needs 100% derv as on the cold days the veg oil starts to gel at relitively normal temps.

Until Tesla introduce the Tesla 3, reputed to retail at around £30k, most electric cars are useless to anyone who plans on driving more than 60 miles on one round trip, or maybe 100, 50 each way. If I go out on a Sunday, yes, there are journeys where I could just about do it on one charge, but with many of the places I go being 50/60/70 miles away, with zero charging facilities, then it’s a non-starter, pun intended.
When I used to go biking at various trail centres, it would involve a round trip of at least 140 miles, with bugger-all facilities for charging.
And yes, there are hybrid petrol/diesel-electric cars, but few offer reasonable bike carrying space, and they’re expensive.
Plus there’s the environmental costs involved in mining the lithium for making the batteries that you’re so obsessed with, which I don’t suppose you care over much about, because that happens in a foreign country far away.

Indeed. I could use it to commute (but I take the train) and get into the Peak District and back, but I would need something else to go further afield, like the Yorkshire Dales or Lakes. Hybrids only appear to have advantages for urban travel, electric only are short range, so two cars required. Many of us can’t afford new technology anyway.

I find the thought of a Renault Twizzy for round town use surprisingly attractive.

Pre heat it. And yes, earlier engines (mine’s a 2005 R20, so not that old), but the point being that a veg burner that is looked after is likely to be better for the environment than a battery powered car (that leccy has to come from somewhere and cars ain’t built like what they was). 😉

Economy takes a huge hit if charging from the motor which defeats the object somewhat.

im actually tempted to go test drive a 1.2Turbo berlingo – it has a 110 bhp and says it has torques….. and the economy figures dont look bad….30 quid tax and insurance is buttons How ever they dont do it with an autobox or a 6speed which is a shame

my last shot of a 1.2 TCE dacia logan mcv was horrendous at NSL on noise and fuel – compared to the back to back test with a diesel 1.5DCI Logan.

My issue is that they seem to have great round town economy. I rarely use my car round town – its mostly used for the 60 odd mile each way trip to parents or going weekends away/racing so round town economy isnt important to me in the slightest no good getting 45 round town if i only get 32 on the motorway.

@Jambalya – I sold it as I really didn’t like it as a car. Back in a 3 litre petrol estate 🙂

I can’t really remember why it didn’t fit like that, but from memory, my seatpost was not a dropper and I don’t use a quick release which meant there wasn’t enough height at the back for it to be upright so it needed to go in backwards. The height and width of the front end, plus length of the bike, made it impossible as when the handlebars were turned, it was then too long

I dont think my large 29ers would go in fully built with the saddle in riding position (rigid forks and bolted seat post) given the high boot floor and lack of length between the rear of the front passenger seats and the rear hatch.

I never really persevered either, as the faff of taking out the parcel shelf and then three individual seats, lugging them all to the house and then finding the floor space (no garage) to put them without damaging them or the house, was way in excess of taking out the parcel shelf and flipping one seat and removing the front wheel and wedging the bike in.

I find it far easier in the 3 series to just fold the rear seats down and slide the bike in under the parcel shelf with the front wheel replaced 🙂
