  • New trainers and probably about time to do some ‘research’

My feet get far too hot, far too easily…they get washed regularly, but I tend to be on the warmer side of roasting so my feet tend to cook all day. Work has relaxed their dress code and I’m in trainers for the day – they are comfier than my work shoes, but aren’t any cooler (or warmer).

So my current Salomon XA Pro shoes (Goretex, so I’ve always assumed they’d be cool) are split and burst – so I need to get some new feet covers.

I don’t tend to horde shoes, they get worn for everything until they fall apart, so I’m needing to find a narrow (I’ve a high arch) trainer that will keep my feet cooler, need to be able to stand some use outside but also work for potential running around (badminton) and ideally be a wee bit weather resistant – they don’t need to survive extreme conditions but ideally not be like a sponge if it is damp. They also probably need to look ‘presentable’ i.e. no garishly bright colours.

I’m aware I’m not going to find a ‘tough’ trainer that will do all that, but what do people suggest? I’ll then start taking a nosey at a smaller pool of potential trainers.

    Cheers.

The non-goretex salomons are waaaaaaay cooler than the goretex ones and dry out faster too.

I get hot feet and reserve waterproof shoes for minging hillwalking days.

Goretex or similar waterproof ones will generally be hotter than the non lined variants. I tend to go for summer vs winter trainers.

Would look at approach shoes although they would be less useful for running around.

Got a pair of five ten access mesh which are nice in this weather. Would be crap for badminton though. Vaguely presentable depending on the colour chosen.

The non-goretex ones have incredibly soft soles, so they’d be worn out in about 5 months (as discovered by the last pair – comfy and cool but didn’t last as long as I’d hoped…do they do them with more solid soles, perhaps?

Just ditch the goretex. Normal running shoes are usually pretty draughty by design, though you can get something closer to a walking shoe if you want to blend in a bit better.

The Adidas Climacool range is very breathable, some models have ventilated soles though so great for this weather, not great if it rains.

Always makes me smile. What do you wear on the way back?

Nice but how supportive are the soles? Look like they’d collapse and you’d go over on your ankle.

Brilliant, not what they look like at all. I run in a pair on road and they are very pliant and supportive. They’re sturdy, though that doesn’t come over in the pic.

Ive got 3 On running shoes, these and a couple for off road trail running and I love them to bits.

Just buy some shoes for badminton, and others for everyday wear they will last longer and be more economical in the long run, and your feet will thank you.

You don’t need a shoe collection, but it is good to have a little specialisation 1 size does not fit all applications.

Mine are a few years old now, but Haglofs Gram shoes are very light and cool. I’ve used them for (ahem) gravel running too and they’re the most comfortable shoe I have. Worth I look, I reckon. Mine are the fancy blue ones they used to do, but their colours have gone more conservative now –

Having said the above – no canvas trainers are ever going to be as cool and comfortable as leather shoes with cotton (or bamboo ) socks.

Having read the OP again… you wear the same trainers during the day as for doing sporting activities? I think you should change that for a start.

Rock and Run are selling 5.10 Mesh cheap at the moment, very airy design…

I suffer hot feet in summer too.
I’ve gone down the Reebok Crossfit (Nano) shoe route.
It’s mostly mesh, so it breathes an unbelivable amount with the added benefit of being super light. I’ve got a pair for the gym (3 years old and going strong) as well as some for out and about. Not cheap, but worth it.

I’ve lived in whatever Salomons Go Outdoors have on offer that week for about 10 years now.  Can’t fault ’em.

They’re shoes for use on an approach.  When you’re leaving it’s still an approach, just as if you go the wrong way through an entrance it’s still an entrance.

Goretex and non-goretex salomon XA pro’s have the same sole.  They both ware out quickly compared to a traditional walking boot, like most ‘approach/trail’ shoes.

Why would the goretex version be cool?

Yes, my trainer tends to get worn for everything…does get removed, but they do everything I do. Don’t really do much running and Badminton isn’t that frequent.

Have tried my leather shoes and socks, but didn’t make any difference.

How do the FiveTens size up? I’m a 44, so do I go for the UK9.5 or the UK10?

Those On shoes look good but the price is eye watering…I don’t do enough sport to justify that price for something that just keeps my feet ‘warm’.

I picked up a pair of Scarpa highball approach shoes in Keswick this week. A lot cooler to wear than my goretex lined haggloffs.

Have been wearing them to stomp around Cat Bells yesterday and the hardcore streets of Bowness and Ambleside today, not to mention the tricky task of negotiating on and off boats. They seem to fit the bill pretty well for me, and could be worth a look for you.
