Still waiting for a Doctor moment

Same. She’s perfect in the role of whacky time traveller on adventures with friends through the universe solving this or that, and ticks all the boxes of what the original spec of The Doctor would be. I’m just not quite feeling she’s always *The* Doctor as the character, though I do really like her. Don’t know, scenes in the TARDIS there’s no problem, she’s The Doctor there. It might be the show itself doesn’t feel much like Doctor Who either. It’s a very alien feel. Though kind of good as it needed a shake up.

The last two were a bit more ordinary cheap sci-fi (with decent budget for affects), but the music is bringing it up a notch. Though it feels quite edgy much of the time and I don’t feel like I can sit comfortably and watch a faithful old friend of a show that way. It’s interesting though.

Ramping up the history and education side of things in tonight’s episode. Sadly, and horribly, relevant today as well. Not sure if my allergies are acting up, but my eyes have got a bit itchy…

Not your average episode but pretty impressive. Show a great deal of confidence in the show to do something like that.

Great concept and narrative. Absolutely shocking dialogue and characterisation. Plus the absolutely gaping hole of the nan not appearing to question why her grand daughter was at her wedding 70 years ago (unless I missed something while wrestling stolen stuff off the puppy)…

Still not sure about this Doctor. Loving the energy and butterfly mind, and still a fantastic Tennant impression in places but what I’m struggling with is the uncertainty, almost fear that this version shows quite often. Even allowing for a recent regeneration it doesn’t feel very ‘doctorish’ although willing to accept that maybe it’s this doctor’s ‘thing’.

Took a while for Peter Capaldi to get going, i think she’s doing well so far.

Definitely improving – though some very shabby acting & dialogue from one or two!

I’m torn really. These historical episodes are excellently done and great for getting people to look further into the history (bet Partition of India was a spike on Google). However I’m not sure I want it to all be like this and little or no pure fun fantasy drama with aliens.

Anyway, out of interest I thought I recognised some of the locations, especially the hill/mountain pass bits. Turns out southern Spain around Granada area. I was riding a little west of that last year. Very similar, and lovely countryside.

I binge-watched the last three episodes (3, 4, & 5). After 3 & 4 I was about ready to sack it off, partly because the bloody sonic screwdriver seems to have a bigger part than most of the cast. I was gutted when the muppet/troll barfed it up again.

Ep 5 was, however, brilliant. I’m not sure how Doctor Who-ish it was, though the time-travel element did throw up the grandfather paradox and the aliens were never more than a distraction/detour from the main story.

I’m also coming to the (reluctant) conclusion that Bradley Walsh would have made a better Doctor….

I’m still not sure. I think Jodie makes a reasonable doctor and I enjoyed the first one. But since then, not so much.

Stick with it, you may yet come round. A mere 9 years ago* a current fan was coming out with this kind of thing at the very idea of a lady Doctor –

For the hard of thinking, the DOCTOR can’t be a woman unless he chooses to change gender, which is unlikely. However, there are female Time Lords; the Doctor has a daughter, and a Granddaughter, Susan, plus Romala was a Time Lord. I just don’t see how the Doctor could become a woman and fit the continuity of forty-plus years of the series. Sorry to all the sexism conspirasists out there, but it ain’t gonna happen.

Socialist plot of the week being anti-Amazon, though computers have feeling too, but still can’t be replacing all those human workers.

Subtle plot of the week you need to consider how people live in a more automated world, removing jobs is not a bad thing if people can live good lives because of it. Almost as if 10% were forced to be slaves so the others could escape it.

A bit silly this one in style. Enjoyed it though. All a bit Sarah Jane Adventures. Kids should be considering how automation will effect how they work in future though… big changes will be afoot on their watch.

Last one with the pseudo Amazon was pretty meh.  She’s also a bit to nice to be the Doctor and we really need a bit of peril and fear.  Nothing so far has really challenged her or raised my hackles, we need the Angels, the flesh eating bugs that lived in the shadows or that thing that found them when the tour buggy broke down on the cold moon (Catherine Tate and oi Spaceman era).

It’s all a bit to nice and moralistic, I keep expecting a cheesy mid 80’s final scene lesson or message ………

Jury is still out – she’s a bit too whacky for me, like a kid whose forgotten to take their Ritalin. There’s the occasional glimpse of something in this Doctors character that’s quite different & novel but it’s not really come to the fore yet. Quite enjoyed the scene where they hid in the partitioned alcove – reminded me of Bernard Cribbins wayyyyyy back in the day & the shonky sets of that time!

It’s all a bit light weight despite the obvious gravity of some of the subject matter. The scripts and cast feel a bit like they’ve been created around a rather specific set of guidelines.

Actually preferred Sunday nights episode (more traditional Doctor Who although pretty obvious simple story line) to the partition and Rosa Parks episodes which left me feeling a little uneasy given the superficial handling of such important events.

Not Doctor Who at it’s best, almost feels like we’ve got Lady Doctor now so no need to try hard with the content.

Big issues. Kids/family show. The balance was achieved I think. Both spent too much time explaining things for me… BUT I AM A GROWN ADULT.

Both stories were a bit too reliant on Back To The Future ideas… but both had genuinely emotional moments… the partition one in particular was very moving, for me. The music helped, it really added more than atmosphere towards the end (unlike the Parks episode where it was all a bit forced perhaps).

If you think they aimed too high, and fell short, fair enough. I can see that. I’m glad it’s not all big spiders and robot assassins though, fun though that kind of thing is.

Does anyone else find the volume is really low? When switching to watch it, have to whack the volume up a long way.

Think she is fab as the Dr but having 3 “helpers” is daft.  She needs more screen time.

Loving watching it with my kids, and i haven’t seen any other episodes since ages so some box sets might happen when this series finishes.

After watching the new series with my children the eldest has started to work his way through the box sets starting with Christopher Eccleston. He absolutley loves it and it has reminded me that, at the end of the day, it is a kid’s show.

Vampires of Venice last night. We did Blink a few days ago too. It scared the crap out of me.

Blink was the best epsiode of Doctor Who I have ever seen.  Although if someone could explain how Martha ran past the kid who the doctor gave the watch to on the street that would be great.

My OH is loving the fact that our 2 boys (who generally think girls are rubbish) LOVE the programme and the Dr.  Kind of dont want to spoil it with an Ecclestone box set 😉

To be fair, a lot of the early Hartnell/Troughton stuff was a bit Bill and Ted too – cave men, famous historical figures etc.

He absolutley loves it and it has reminded me that, at the end of the day, it is a kid’s show.

We’ve just watched the first ‘new’ series too – really enjoyed it again.

Just started the Tennant episodes and I know i’ll enjoy the first couple of series before it all gets a bit biblical…..

The latest episode was an odd one… certainly not a go at Amazon as has been reported elsewhere, quite well balanced.

JW is going to be excellent – lots of quirky stuff in this one and nice to see Yaz kicking ass.

I like the Scooby gang vibe – all good characters very well acted.

Just thinking about buying the Matt Smith box sets – gave up watching initially half way through after missing a couple of episodes but can’t help thinking I should give him another go…….

Don’t need the box sets they are all on the iplayer or netflix I think

Besides, I’m only missing the Matt Smith years, have all the other ‘new’ stuff (and loads of the pre reboot stuff if anyone wants to borrow owt) on DVD/Blu-ray and the gap on the shelf bothers me.

Still think Peter Capaldi should have had another series at least – he was fantastic and the writing struck a great balance between weekly thrills and overarching storylines.

ATM, I’m going Capaldi, Eccleston, Whittaker, Tennant, Smith as favourites.

DT was superb, but I felt he dragged on way too long and his last series was overblown and a bit too messianic for me.

I like a confused Doctor.

Felt a bit Torchwood this one. Zombie-ish story, not much that feels Doctor Who again. Scooby gang useless again.
