I guess I’m just not as clever as you

Did you think it was just a straight forward story about a young girl and her goat friend trying to escape her nasty father?

Kung-Fu fighting Adolf Hitler with the aid of giant Thor and a T-Rex riding valkyrie?

    Hell yes.*

*Film may not actually be dark, but it is indie.

No I didn’t, I simply commented that the it warranted a second viewing. The bit about you being clever was sarcastic.

    Under The Skin.
One of those where you feel frustrated whilst watching but it sticks in the head for days. I would recommend it.

Not seen it for a long time but Last Exit to Brooklyn is probably worth a go if you’re after ‘dark’.

“A Lonely Place To Die” was a great Scottish film. Not gore porn at all, but it certainly made me feel uncomfortable at parts. “Red State” was a great diversion for Kevin Smith, again not gore porn but has it’s share of WTF moments. “Battle Royale” was great, but the sequel, like the manga, leaves a lot to be desired. “The Skin I Live In” was suitably weird too. I have little else to add off the top of my head, although I did hear that the remake of “Evil Dead” was worth a watch too.

Snowtown is bleak, it was also the film that has had the most walkouts at a screening I’ve been to.

twin peaks fire walk with me is worth watching (along with almost everything else by david lynch as said earlier).

the 80’s version of the dead zone directed by david chronenberg along with most things by him (videodrome is very good).

nightwatch/daywatch are also good (russian films).

nikita by luc besson is bloody great too (obviously leon too).

I took obscure to mean not clear / easily understood on the first viewing. Needs watching a couple of times. Which I’d agree with.

Seen it once, have no need, or desire to ever want to see it again.

Be better getting a streaming service subscription IMO 🙂

Amazon prime has a big back catalogue, quite a lot of obscure stuff in there

The Proposition’s a great show. totally forgot about it. The Road, well made but falls into the “wouldn’t wish it on my enemies” category. Protracted misery as entertainment, not for me.

Series 7 is certainly an indie effort, underground movie with a lot to say about where reality TV is heading.

Just googled it – can’t believe it’s 14 years old!

The movie From Hell is also pretty dark…

& Darren Aronofsky’s early movies Pi & Requiem for A Dream are certainly on the darker side….

Streaming subscription- I like DVD/tactile selecting. Bit old school but possession feels nicer than having access to 😀

I once watched Dancer in the Dark, Lilya 4ever and Requiem for a Dream in one week. Good job I didn’t watch Grave of the Fireflies, I think it would have killed me. :/

I liked it- although it was more of a find and kill film along hollywood lines.

My alltime fave is Twilight Samurai though. More drama/soap but one thing I did like about 13 Assasins (and alot of Jap films) is the ability to have **** all special effects, no big scenery – often inside a traditional house with only the lighting and acting to carry the scene. some great acting performances – very dramatic. One especially was the sole survivors wife, when he tells her he has to go away. Class.

So have you seen any of Akira Kurosawa’s samurai films?

I tend to think of it as a modernised Seven Samurai. I mentioned the director Miike Takashi earlier, he’s a pretty fascinating character. Veers all over the place stylistically and thematically. One minute he’s making kids superhero movies, the next it’s slasher/gorefests or indeed musicals.

Much weirder and funnier than the trailer and actually pretty brilliant.
