Looking for a new lightweight backpacking tent for mountain use in the summer (wild & remote camping). I’m talking high quality and expensive mountain tents here rather than cheap and cheerful festival or family camping tents.

Looked at the usual North Face, Terra Nova, Macpac, Hilleberg, Vango, VauDe, Mountain Hardware, Mountain Equipment etc, but are there any other brands I’ve forgotten? The more unusual and unheard of the better 🙂

You know I actually Googled that, thinking it was a brand.

How tall are you? Do you mind sleeping in a coffin, or would you prefer a bit of room? Would you prefer a tent that goes up all in one or do you mind putting up inner first then putting the outer skin over the top?

You should have stopped your list at Hilleberg, maybe the best tents ever. Certainly fill the expensive criteria.

I pitched mine 120 times and still looks like new, all be it a tad dirty.

You can get lighter tents, you can get roomier tents, and you can get lighter and roomier tents.

I’m 6′ 1″ so would prefer a bit of room so 1 man tents are out, and I don’t really mind how it pitches, more concerned about weight than ease of pitching.

Must say, MSR are looking particularly good so far. I have one of their stoves and it’s ace – forgot they did tents too.

    Tarptent scarp 1!

Look at the dimensions and the weight, its as big as some manufacturers claim to be 2 man tents and comes in at iirc 1.2 kilos. I sold mine to someone off here, and regret doing so very very much.

I am 6’2″ and found the macpac microlight and the terra nova voyager 2, to be too small, yeah I could fit in them but found I would be touching the walls as I turned in my sleep etc. I have found the shape of the tent can make a big difference to the size it feels. I have a mountain equipment dragonfly 2 (for many years), which is in hillberg bombproof territory and good for size, but is a little heavy.

Marmot are by far and away my fave. Dunno if you can get them here though. That Limelight 3P I sold to someone off here was just fab.
