Laura Marling? Though maybe depends on what you mean by ‘new’ – ie: new to her or new this year.

New Mayhem record is quite good. Daemon.

Villagers ? – might be worth a listen.

Rachael Dadd, Jesca Hoop, Rozi Plain had albums out this year that I enjoyed. Haley Heynderickx from last year.

Bluegrass? I quite like old crow medicine show..

Still going after 50 years Steeleye Span have a new cd out.
Opening Sidmouth Folk Festival this year.

Q Mag’s recommends from the past year include Aldous Harding, Sharon van Etten, Jessica Pratt.
Worth checking out. I quite liked the middle one.

Oh I quite liked the one with a pig in her arms on the sleeve too. Name escapes me..

There are so many female solo artists and bands featuring women it’s hard to keep up!
Weyes Blood and Joan Shelley are two I’ve bought recently, and looking through recent copies of Uncut there are good reviews of new albums by Julia Holter, Amber Arcades, Arc Iris, Molly Birch, Cat Power, Sarah Davachi, Emika, Laura Gibson, Amy Helm, Kristin Hersh, Adrianne Lenker/Big Thief, Anna St Louis, Aoife Nessa Frances, A Girl Called Eddy, (I have her first album, released in 2004, this is her second), The Innocence Mission, Keeley Forsyth, Susanne Sundfør, Squirrel Flower.
That’s just a quick scan through the last two issues.
There’s plenty more out there!
I really recommend Uncut Magazine, it has great interviews, lots of reviews of new and re-released albums, and a free sample CD that’s always worth a listen.

Sound of the Sirens – absolutely brilliant. Acoustic, bit folky but not overly, stunning harmonies, amazing melodies and if you see them live bloody funny. Their album This Time is just lush.

I fell in love with Mandolin Orange last summer – or more precisely, I fell in love with Emily of Mandolin Orange. Went to see them at some poxy little venue in Oldham Street, Manchester, which was grossly overheated and unventilated, which spoiled the whole experience. But I still love this recording of Boots of Spanish Leather for the rapport between Emily and Andrew:

Could try The Delines, more country than folk but very good.

Not my kind of thing, but I’ve seen a lot of mentions for Big Thief in respect of this sort of genre.
