Am not an expert. Found near my house – looks kind of like a cep?

Very much an amateur culinary mycologist and IANAD but looks like a red cracked boletus

Yes you will die, but probably not because of that mushroom.  Nonetheless, identify with caution as any red on stem MAY indicate one of the comparatively few toxic boletes

    Here’s a short guide:

Don’t eat that. It won’t kill you, but it’ll taste rubbish.

Immediate thought was boletus, and if so no, you’ll be fine. However, just be sure that you’re happy with the species, nobody else will be taking a tisk by eating it!

Thanks for all the comments. Malvern’s link seems to indicate they will taste OK ( and defo not poisonous). Will let you know (hopefully).

If you want to know what could be in store if you get it wrong, this podcast is a fascinating 25 minutes or so. It’s story telling as much as science and very entertaining, if rather dark.

Probably not worth the risk unless you’ve got an expert in tow.

That’s not a deathcap, but if you were to eat part of a deathcap it is untreatable. The ‘treatment’ is to basically put you in a bed and hope for the best whilst contacting any next of kin.

+1 anagallis_arvensis, the top of the curtains right enough.

All well at the moment – put them into a Bol sauce. Starting to feel a bit flushed …but that might be the wine. Whole family has had some, so may be another Oxfam headline tomorrow morning.

All mushrooms are edible, its just that some are only edible once.

Despite being a fun-guy, I’m not an expert on mushrooms.

but I’m aware that the toxicity of mushrooms is influenced by their specific soil conditions.

thats why in places like Italy, the people who gather edible mushrooms tend to be really old dudes. Local knowledge, etc.

as Terence McKenna noted, “there are old mycologists and bold mycologists, but no old and bold mycologists”.
