    Good evening – a little help required…

New BB needed so am removing Race Face evolve cranks/chainring. I’ve taken the drive-side dust cap off, do I now need an extraction tool e.g. Park Tool CCP-44? Any advice/experience re: removal and/or alternative tool suggestions?

Does the Race Face Team XC BB have the same fitting/use the same tool as a Shimano Hollowtech II BB cup, e.g. Park Tool BBT-9? If not, which tool would be required?

    Many thanks, in advance.

You need more advice than mine, but my thoughts are taking that dust cap off is a no-no.
It’s a required part of the self extraction process.
Instead loosen the dust cap (10mm?)three turns then unscrew the inner bolt (8mm?) until it hits the dust cap and then it will push on the cap to self-extract the arm.
When the inner bolt moves no more, you loosen the dust cap more and then wind out inner bolt more and repeat until arm comes off. It’s a crazy solution to a non problem. Shimano XTR used to be very similar with an outer ring and specialist tool.

But – again seek more advice. I can only go on my memories of the RaceFace gubbins I had years ago.

I’ve taken the drive-side dust cap off,

Is that not the self extracting bolt bit? You usually leave this on and then use an 8mm allen key on the inner bolt to extract the crank.

If it’s a threaded BB it needs a larger tool than shimano, I can’t remember the name of the tool off hand.
You can knock the bearings out and replace them if it’s the threaded one however.

Thanks for the thoughts so far, much appreciated…

So I’ve tried to work out if the dust cap is part of a self-extraction process but I’m at a loss as to how it could be? It’s a standard 8mm hex bolt with a ‘solid base’ – i.e. you can’t partially unscrew it and put another hex key ‘through’ it to a smaller ‘inner’ bolt, as such?

When I remove the dust cap nut, there’s a 22mm thread before a step (with a ten-tooth spline) to a smaller 14mm thread – are these there for some sort of extraction tool, that pulls the crank arm away?

Yes, it’s the threaded RaceFace BB. What are people’s experiences re: longevity… should I replace the bearings and go again or upgrade/change?

    Any further advice/suggestions/experiences welcome… Cheers.

Some of the Race Face cranks aren’t self extracting.

If it’s like some of the ones I have, you need the extracting tool. I use an X Tools one I got from Chain Reaction years ago. They have 2 different sized heads that just screw in.

As @johnw1984 says – is it like the RaceFace Aeffect cranks – that needs one of the ‘old-skool?’ threaded crack extractor tools that we all have somewhere in the bottom of our tool kits for years gone by.

yup sounds like mine used to be. Youll need an isis crank puller and a standard BB tool.

good luck. Make sure its threaded as far into the axle as it will go then back it out half a turn and go at it.

    bastard tight

The nut on the drive side of mine is rounded off 🙁

I have just looked for the 1st time to try and describe it on here. Good job I looked. How the **** do I get that out now?

    with great difficulty.

i suggest hacksawing through the axle and replace with a shimano crank and bb
