I need some M3 coupling nuts OR 60mm long M3 bolts – which ever is the cheaper option – any point (with links) in the right direction please? Not willing to pay 60p per nut!!

I suspect you are going to pay a premium as its an unusual size. Cheap parts tend to be those used a lot in manufacture or on building sites. Could you use a PCB stand off: eg https://uk.farnell.com/wurth-elektronik/970600321/standoff-hex-female-female-60mm/dp/2884622 (well over budget, unless you but 100+) but probably cheaper elsewhere, especially if you can wait for it to come from China

Would M3 studding work (available on eBay) or does it have to be a bolts?

Yep, M30 x 60 is rocking horse poo. Studding will be the easy option. Or, a couple of M3 standoffs give extra lengthage to your standard bolt.

Buy longer and cut them down. Run a nut up the bolt, saw the end off, file it then take the nut off – the nut will open the threads up again.
