    IT Manager in Newbie

The right location for people who’ve not been an IT Manager before.

I do UniVerse Basic, been doing it over 20 years.

    hell of a commute though

The role would involve supporting existing software and implementing new as we gradually replace out-dated systems

    Followed by

Programming experience in several languages, ideally one to be UniVerse Basic
    SQL Server
    Crystal Reports
Experience supporting accounts packages and other off the shelf software
Expert in Microsoft Excel, Word& Access

    Yeah, sounds bloody thrilling!

Do you really? Blimey, there’s not many of of those left. We still support customer using Universe – I started programming in pick-a-like databases when Universe was still Prime Information.

Someone found some code I wrote in 1985 the other day – still in live use at a customer site and running hundreds of thousands of times a day. We built to last in those days. Although it did make me feel old.

I started on McDonnell Douglas Reality systems back in the late 80s…

there’s another STW forum member who used to work at our place; I think I’m indirectly his replacement.

    we use SB+ as well.

The Cognos, Oracle & SQL skills I learned over 13 years ago are now long since forgotten 🙁

I worked for McDonnell Douglas down in Bristol for a couple of years on reality systems in the early 90’s 🙂

SQL transition from Universe isn’t too bad, tbh – it’s mainly syntactical differences until you get into SysAdmin type bits.

Biggest issue we have with developers is going from the way that most Universe systems are coded into a more, errrm, modern application structure.

    Hello 😀

Yep started at McDonnell Douglas (Warrington / Health) in ’92.
I was contracting where John works then left to go travelling / get married before John joined. Now I’m in the .NET world but there is still a live PICK type system run by the current company but I stay clear of that now.

I’d do it, but it’s years since i’ve touched BASIC, and despite 13 years IT experience i’ve managed to avoid all the packages on that list.

is that like Universal Business Basic?

Might be vaguely similar. In the same way that American English is similar to Uk English

I used to code in UBB years ago, because it was portable between DG-UX and HP-UX.

Data General Aviion, blimey that’s a blast from the past! 😀

    Not paying much though….

Must be ripe for being bribed by enemy states to give up all the petabytes of phone calls / emails they’ve been snooping on in the last 20 minutes…..

GCHQ or indeed any of the security services are rotten payers of their permies. I’d love to do work for them but you’d really struggle to pay for accommodation down south on that. Did some work at Hanslope & everyone there was contracting – even the guys who “found” my 3G card and tried to escort me off site.

Ah I wondered whose modem I was using to hack their systems…..

Yeah, apparently the cell advertising itself as O2 isn’t actually O2. Whodathunkedit?
