What has worked for me without fail is a small drill and some filler.

Tapping with your knuckle, then small drill in area. Check for electrics though.

Never stop being nervous when drilling into a wall…

Depending on age/structure I use a strong magnet in our lathe and plaster walls as it picks up the nails then use a plum line..

It’s fairly recent – 80s so assume plaster board.

How does the small drill technique work?

Trial an error or one hole plus a bendy something to find the stud?

I was hoping not to go down the pin a tail on the donkey route!

I have a rare earth magnet stuck to a cork. It picks up even buried screws. Available on ebay for pennies…

I used the magnet from a scalextric car to find the screws holding the plaster board in my garage. They’re pretty strong and I could feel them pulling to the screw from a distance.

If you need to find a series of studs, once you’ve got two, that’ll give you an idea of the gap to narrow the search. I also found most sets of screws on each stud were placed at similar intervals.

use the app – make a hole – poke your tool in it
