So, my Dad wants an emergency spot light to use on his boat, for general purpose but potentially to search the seas for someone lost overboard. He’s suggested one of these but they look a bit underpowered to me. It’s not possible to convert lumens and candela directly, but from googling I believe it works out at about 400 lumens.

Knowing what I do about bike lights, I’d have thought in 2015 it might be possible to get something brighter for the money. Can anyone recommend something better, with the criteria:

    Reliable
Rechargeable (via 12w cigarette lighter ideally)
Ergonomic (able to use with gloves on, in a rush)
    Bright
Since he wants it for Christmas, it probably needs to come from the UK.

    Moon on stick?

You can charge exposure light from a usb 12v adapter.

Not sure what they have at that power output but they do have a factory shop worth looking at.

I’ve also used fenix torches in the past. Regulated output and very bright using aa batteries.

I’d have a word with Exposure myself. They specialise in Marine and Diving lights as well as Bike lights, and if nothing else, will at least be able to recommend something suitable for his needs.

Not sure I can afford exposure but will have a gander. Anyone got any suggestions closer to the £25-40 range like the Draper light in the OP?

For what he’s talking about, I can’t recommend Clulite enough, proper bombproof searchlight gear – the clubman or laser lite ones being really popular for lamping.

Saw a modern USB rechargeable take on the old gun type torches you used to get quoting to be 1 million candle power in Costco if you have access to a local one?

At work we’re supplied with Nightsearcher torches.

    In all seriousness this

Lights my large back garden very nicely

Just bought one. My first serious bike light could not belive how bright it is USB charging. One large button I could operate in myriding gloves

The only down side is that you’d need to put the handle bar mount on to attach a lanyard. But I don’t see this as a problem
