I’ve overseas and as such haven’t got the option of getting some proper lessons. I got a guitar sent out to me by amazon and got the Hal Leonard guitar book, but I’d say I’m struggling more with learning to read music rather than actually playing the guitar. I’ve seen on the web that most people use guitar tabs, does anyone know any good lesson books that teach in this style?

Any recomendations?

When I learned, I just practiced chords over and over and over (and over). Learn them, and you can belt out pretty much anything – worry about the fretwankery later 🙂

Use the web, tabs are the way forward for most folks, practice open chords like sc-xc said over and over, over and over, over and over, over and over.

Took me a year till i could string a line of chords together into a reasonable song… FBFW’S link is also very good.

Cheers for that guys. The standard music notation was annoying me, I gave up piano as a kit for that reason. I’m 31 now and always wanted to play, so I thought I’d persevere.

Learn the basic chords, and depending on your music style, learn the barre chords.. and then use http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ or any other guitar tab website to bluff your way through the song you want to play

Get yourself a reasonable guitar – if you buy a cheapo “guitar-a-like” you’ll get frustrated with your playing… and although you might be improving it will still sound like pants. I’d recommend spending £200 at least. Epiphone electrics are good starter guitars. Electrics are also a lot easier to play than acoustics… which is good. Go for an acoustic only once you’ve got the hang of it.

It’s an acoustic, but that’s fine.
