  • Knives, multitools and other ‘EDC’ thread
  • I’ve bought a few Leatherman and SAK pieces to add to my collection lately – will post pics at some point, but this is my latest addition – Civivi Trailblazer Damascus Carbon. UK legal carry.

Show what ya got – hopefully without descending into whether or not you should carry sharp objects

There being no legal carry here I pick up the appropriate selection for bike on the way out but no blade.

Leatherman Wave for me. Not generally carried around but very handy to have in the car, hiking bag, suitcase etc – I’ve lost count of the things it’s fixed over the years. I keep meaning to get some of the “expansion” tool bits for it.

Slightly randomly some droolworthy leatherman tools in this Crimson guitars video https://youtu.be/WJZpvdqlGy0

    Gerber Armbar slim,

Small blade, hex driver and bottle opener. Light and cheap.

Gerber Shard for bottle opening, general prying and last resort screwdrivering.

Leatherman Style for small blade and scissors

I have an original Leatherman Wave and a Skeletool plus a Gerber Suspension but they are only carried when I have a definite need – the two above live on my key ring.

See I’m more of a Parker Jotter type albeit with a Fischer cartridge, got a basic one but really need to get a flighter. Wouldn’t mind a Fischer Space pen though, would be handy for out and about.

My phone is pretty much my EDC these days though as a blunt tool it’s useless.

Spectacles, watch, big Swiss Army knife, Bluetooth earbuds and Android phone pretty much do it all for me.

A couple of Mora companions, a Boker Magnum Elk and an Enzo Necker 70. I used to have a SOG Flash ii but recent legislation means that’s consigned to history. The little Enzo is the one I carry without fail when I’m out in the woods or on the hill.

I had a Skeletool in my bag for about 10 years, until I had it confiscated when I visited the Science museum.

I keep meaning to replace it, but the exact model I had – carbon, but with the combo knife blade – isn’t available.

Why do they all have bottle openers? I rarely need to open a bottle, I’m sure it could be removed or replaced with something more versatile.

Fair enough. I’d much rather have eg a proper screwdriver or bit holder than a bottle opener, but there often seems to be a crappy little ‘screwdriver’ and a full size opener. I wish there was more choice.

All the manufacturers seem inordinately proud of the bottle opener. There’s always a pic of someone opening a bottle in the ads, as if we wouldn’t believe it possible if we didn’t see it for ourselves.

Did you make the stainless steel pen? Proper “heavy-ish” stainless steel?

I am interested as I have been looking for a pen like this for a while.

Which multitool has decent scissors? They’re the most useful item but instead you get a thing for taking stones out of hooves, or mending sails, or other pointless stuff 🙁

Opening boxes, cutting rope, general knife stuff really

It’s a Bastion bolt action. It is heavy, but still very usable. The carbon one has a more natural pen like feel in the hand. They take Parker refills

Hmmm, not sure how you define decent, but the LM Charge’s, Free K4, Surge and Style that I have, all have scissors that do a job, as does the SAK Alox Pioneer penknife

Leatherman Kick if I’m out on the bike or hiking/travelling. Nothing for popping to the shops.

    May be of interest?

My EDC blade is a Swiss Army Knife. I got my first SAK as a leaving present from work in the mid-90s. I thought “that’s a lovely thought, but I’ll probably never use it.” It then saw near-daily use for about 20 years.

A few years ago I lost it, I actually think I left it on a desk at work and someone stole it. I recanted this tale to a mate who was later best man at my wedding in 2015, and he bought me a replacement as a wedding gift.

    Brilliant things.

The other thing I rarely leave the house without is a micro torch (CZ to the forum!) the size of your pinkie. The first one I got was a MecArmy one off Amazon, but OLIGHT occasionally kick out offers which are “free plus postage” and work out at about a fiver. I’ve snagged a couple now and they’re bloody brilliant. Again, near-daily use.

Hi Cougar! I’ve got so many different flashlights, but the one I’m currently using is a Nitecore light, it’s advantage is that as well as being small, it’s rechargeable via a USB-C port, and it has a turbo-mode accessible by pressing one button, and if it’s left in demo mode, pressing the other button gives a thirty-second light, which is usually just enough for what I need, and the battery doesn’t get run down by it getting accidentally turned on.
I’m actually on my second, I’ve mislaid my first one, somehow, and I’ve come to rely on it so much. It’s usually on a lanyard round my neck with a couple of Sharpies and a very small knife for cutting zipties. That’s for work, it goes onto a keyring at weekends.

My EDC is a genuine Swiss Army issue Victorinox SAK, with the gridded aluminium scales. It opens my tuna tins and peels my oranges and has done since about 1997.

I like the Opinels. Cheap and sharp. Though the round shape doesn’t sit in the pocket all that well sometimes. I had a flatter Gerber that I liked but I’ve lost it 🙁

    Which multitool has decent scissors?

For smaller ones the Leatherman Style CS has best scissors I’ve used but it seems to be discontinued: https://www.leatherman.com/style-cs-24.html

These are my most used, as they are always on my keyring – and yeah, they are better even than the ones on a Charge

Fisher Space Pen and a tiny Swiss Army knife. The SAK has a tiny blade for opening packages, scissors for cutting broken finger nails, tweezers for pulling splinters out, bottle and can opener. It’s probably got other things too but those are the ones I use.

At that size, I intentionally went for the Style for the scissors as couldn’t see a need for tiny pliers

Original Leatherman PST (in case). had it over 20 years and it’s an invaluable go-to tool for many things. And the tiny Swiss Army Knife on a keyring with scissors and tweezers. I also have a smaller original Leatherman Mini Tool too, but it’s a bit small. Was left to me.
