Out on my Inbred 29er SS this evening. It’s the best bike I’ve ever had. Really love it. Ran it 1×10 over the summer, & it was good; but its better as SS.

GT Peace is another one that comes up cheap occasionally. Likewise the one that Gary Fisher does, & the Haro one.
Bearing in mind a new Inbred frame is now £200 (IIRC), there is the Genesis 29er out soon, at about £350 for the frame, but another £50 could get you a Singular Swift.

Big unit great (only one ride in)
    Swift great
GF Rig great (both old and newer shape)

Chumba’s going for £300 new and you can get the tapered Reba from on-one

    I ride a dialled bikes 26″ ss love/hate.
is the 29er more efficient or easier to pedal over long distances then?
currently have a 140mm trail bike for hooning around duties and techy xc rides but often get out for longer rides where I become 29er SS curious…

I have a new bike itch that needs scratching too!! (funds don’t allow but trawlling thre internet then persuading myself I really will need it, is half the fun!!)

    I built this for ~£180
    Frame £50 on here
    Wheels/tyres £70 on here
    brakes £20 on here
all the other bits I had lying around.

is 34:19 besterest ratio or 32:16 ok..?

soma looks fun for the dollar!!!

Remember bigger wheels mean you need a bigger ratio. My GT is 32:18 and I ride mainly around the flat New Forest. If there were any more hills I would put a 20T on the back.

pretty hilly around my local woods and dartmoor so 20t would suit then i reckon.

    mmmuuussttt resissssst…..

Another fan of the Kona Unit here 😀

This is mine, although it’s now got Project 2 rigid forks fitted.

    I run a 32:18 on it.

i must admit to being curious about both ss and 29″ mtb’s.i had a quick go on a 2012 specialized 29″ mtb (that the bike shop i go to is using as a test bike) just on some tarmac though.as i’m 5ft 5 (and a 1/4 😉 was worried that i’d be too small, but it seemed fine.i felt like i was in the bike though/as opposed to on the bike (if that makes any sense 🙂

Redline Monocog, now in flat bar mode and I like it a lot. Don’t think they are made anymore unfortunately.

You are thinking right. Ss29er is my favourite type of bike. Also check out the salsa elmiarchi.
Charge frames coming soon but ss-able.

I bought a Surly KM off here a few weeks back and love it. I did consider SSing it, but as I’ve already got a Surly 1×1, I’ve kept it geared for longer more, hilly rides. I’m on Dartmoor too, and it’s coped really well with anything I’ve thrown at it so far although my first go at the Nutcracker on it was a bit of an eye opener!

Possible option as a “suck it and see” budget option – you’d probably want to swap out the fork for a rigid though…. £400 at Evans at the moment:

+1 for this – my friend has one and I’ve got the geared version (but I’m a wuss) we both changed the forks to Manitou tower pros and the resulting bikes are superb. (there is scope for a few other changes too, but It’s the geometry that counts)

For my two penneth, I love the whole 29er SS thing and run mine 32/16 as a commuter and 32/18 for hills.
I do however keep bending front wheels and may have to get some bouncy forks.
