I flit between flat pedals and SPD’s on the big bouncer. Is there an MTB shoe that would be nice and grippy on my DMR Vaults and also allow me to have my cleat fitted for when I have the SPD’s on?

I took a punt on a pair of the Planet-x On One trail shoes when they were on sale for £25, for use with SPD pedals, but they seem to work well with platform pedals, even with the cleats fitted. By chance i’ve just fitted an old pair of DMR V12’s, and i’d say these work well. Pedals with smaller pins (e.g. Shimano Saint) felt a bit dodgy, but the pins were quite worn (hence swapping to the V12’s). The cleats don’t seem to make contact anywhere on the flat pedal. Also have plenty of grip for muddy hike-a-bike sessions.

Shimano AM9s take some beating. Lighter than previous editions but enough water proofing and protection to ride all year if paired with waterproof socks for the winter. Bought a pair a couple of weeks ago and they’re very comfy and easy to live with.
