Makes a lot of sense as a starter bike or a winter hacker to me

ebay will be in post TDF fever, and anything good/cheep will get hoovered up for well over what it’s worth.

Best bet if he’s serious is wait till the end of the summer, all the MAMILS will sell up and they’ll be back to their usual 2nd hand bargain prices. And if it proves to be a short term idea he’ll have forgotten about it by then and won’t have wasted any money.
