Putin is not daft (but not a genius) but is callous and also fairly nasty with very nasty friends, this is what makes him the more difficult combination and the spineless west find it easier to pretend he isn’t a problem so they don’t have to deal with it

if you want a really good explanation, read Winter is Coming by Garry Kasparov, has useful pointers on what to do with him, a book that Kasparov laments (on twitter) that should be out of date by now but isn’t

trump is a moron, end of. So is KJ Un

if we dealt with Putin (see above book for how) then KJU would be less of a problem because Putin trades with NK, and it would force China to wind in their aggressive behaviour because they’ve seen it happen to their next door neighbour

Saying Trump is smart because he got elected is like saying the milkybar kid is a world class chocolatier because he’s in all those adverts with chocolate.

Trumps businesses are odd – the banks etc who finance him quickly got a handle on his lack of competence and after the first bailout of a failing project they installed a competent CEO and treat DJT as a brand/promoter not too dissimilar to Kim Kardashian

Putin is very smart and very dangerous. As alluded to by Binners he almost certainly had a key role in getting Trump elected. When it comes out – and it will – it will go down as one of the greatest feats of espionage in history. As for Trump the great businessman. Don’t make me laugh. It is pretty well documented that given the pile he inherited he’d be worth more now if he’d just left it in the bank. His businesses are so toxic that the only Western bank that would touch him was Deutsch Bank (& if anyone wants to buy me a pint one of these days I’ll share with you family experience of how dodgy and corrupt they are – over and above what’s in the public domain) & he and Kushner are in hock to foreign (read Russian and/or Eastern European) banks that could pull the plug on him tomorrow. And we all know whose bidding those banks would do if told..
Forget the salacious stories re Trump’s love for windsurfing and follow the money. Which, ironically, is what the Yanks are belatedly doing.
As for Trump’s intelligence. He’s not SEN but he’s not particularly bright either. And high IQ equating to emotional intelligence (let alone actual intelligence)?? Don’t make me laugh..

You can also look at his track record in business and extrapolate from that. He has a track record of successfully managing large, complex projects. The ability to manage complexity is highly correlated with intelligence/IQ so Trump is clearly above average.

Trump Airlines? Trump University? Trump Casinos? How about those Scottish golf courses?? Which of these demonstrates “clearly above average”?

Trumps business acumen can be summed by the following question

Q: How do you make a small fortune?

A: Start with a large one

Putin, on the other hand? He started off with nowt. Anyone care to guess a figure on the billions in oil wealth he’s now got squirreled away in dodgy Swiss bank accounts?

All while maintaining a 70% approval rating from the people you’ve effectively been defrauding for the best part of 2 decades?

    Seems pretty smart to me!

No IQ does not equate to emotional intelligence. I would need to find the source I read but the indications of the latest research are that the higher your IQ the more likely you are to also be able to read other people’s emotions.

That’s not the same thing as though as then choosing to adapt your approach in response to that information, which is typically regarded as being on the traits of high ‘EQ’ people. That’s more a product of your degree of ‘agreeableness’, i.e. your desire to be nice to people.

More controversially though, there is a school of thinking now that argues that the concept of EQ is all complete nonsense anyway; it’s a myth, a coporate marketing fabrication that captured popular interst for some reason.

This is actually really worth a watch, it’s a very precise analysis of what intelligence actually is and what it is not.

You don’t want to listen to a tenured professor of clinical psychology because you don’t like his voice? Well I guess there are stranger things in the world.

Presumably no transgender troops or troops suffering from bone spurs in that video.
Putin is doing very well out the current situation, basically doing what he wants, destabilising the west and looking like the voice of reason in comparison to Trump. Win win. Shame he is a force for evil.

He does have a very distinct accent and yes, there is a hint of Kermit in there! 😀

    is Putin a leftie now?

Good question, how could I ever accuse a former member of the Communist Party and employee of the KGB of being on the left of the political spectrum?

I wouldn’t accuse that particular “former employee of the KGB” of anything. I like breathing and wish to continue breathing for quite some time.

    “former employee of the KGB

Yes, and director of the FSB.
For a year, until being appointed one of three First Deputy Prime Ministers, and later the same day was appointed acting Prime Minister of the Government of the Russian Federation.
He’s 100% political animal, and knows in exacting detail how to use people to achieve his ends.

“Putin is very smart and very dangerous. As alluded to by Binners he almost certainly had a key role in getting Trump elected”

…and then there is the thorny question of just how North Korea managed to move on their nuclear program from a joke to credible inside a decade.

Putin thrives on destabilisation and has played a weak hand to perfection.
