  • is it safe to use the 3 wires in an extension cable individually?

Hi! I have a new garage door remote receiving unit. I need to connect it to my garage door opener.

I need to connect 2 power wires (12v and ground) and 2 command wires – about 30cm of wire in total.

I don’t have any wire to hand. Can I cut a short length of extension cable, strip off the outer insulation and safely use the 3 internal wires (with their thin insulation) individually?

    Thanks!

I think if you want to knock yourself out then 230v is going to be the better bet.

You can as a bodge to get the thing working but after that replace it with a bit of control cable multicore or .75 singles depending on the amperage with bootlace ferrules and wiring markers. Otherwise when you sell the house the next owner will think your a proper bodging **** !
