That image up there of IDS punching his fists is from when George Osborne announced a rise in the National Living Wage to £9 by 2020. Should he have been saddened that it wasn’t left alone?
Nah, that was a media/messaging coup, renaming the minimum wage “the living wage” but not actually making it anything like a living wage or tying future changes to costs of living was sick genius. All his fellow shitehawks were right to celebrate.
And it’s still paying off today- the current rise is being celebrated as a huge boon for workers even though it’s actually less than what Osborne promised in 2015.
And in true Tory style, because they previously announced that they were only going to increase it to £8.67 instead of the promised £9, adding 5p to that reduced rate and making it £8.72 instead of £9 can be announced as a massive increase.
And the new rate is still only £8.72, while the real Living Wage is £9.30, or £10.75 in London.
But th truth takes 4 paragraphs to type while “5p more than expected on living wage increase” doesn’t.
