Actually, one of my neighbours drives a huge black sporty sedan thing, like a sort of flash Vauxhall. I think it's a Lexus. Tinted windows, wheels with the brakes visible through the fat shiny metal bits, multiple exhaust pipes: you know the sort of thing. One of my favourite amusements of an early evening is watching him driving his beloved toy around and around looking for a parking space. He gets more and more tense; his braking and acceleration gets sharper and sharper.

He's actually quite a nice guy, when he's not moaning about parking. I don't like to point out to him that I keep my vehicle in my garden and don't take up any space. The fuel he must waste, though, just going round in circles.

You're right, it is very sad that you measured it. Perhaps she just hasn't thought about it? Perhaps she's on a tight schedule and has to get away right after she's dropped the kids off? Is it really worth worrying about at all?

My nephew ( aged 6 ) walks to and from school everyday, 2 miles there, 2 miles home.
Guess what he's not obese, not even remotely fat.
His school have a walk to school day every week. The children that don't join in, get to shame their parents.

Actually I've always been narked by the ammount of stay at home parents that drive their kids less than a mile. It's not just the health issue it's safety one as well what with all the cars about.
I'm proud to say mine have always walked or cycled.

One of our neighbours does the same thing – about 200-300 yards from school and I saw her dropping the kids off by car. I told my wife about it and she says 'Oh yeh, she has a really tight schedule and does it to just get into work on time.' Fairy nuff I guess.

I was in an american Campsite in the Rockies once – pretty remote, but set up for cars, rvs etc.

Fatty along the way DROVE 50 yards to the toilet block. I was in the middle of a solo ride across the Rockies FFS!

What these morons don't get is that all the trafic they say makes walking to school unsafe is parents driving kids to school.

Was parked up outside a house on a junction once when a woman came out of the house, got in her car and drove off. 2 minutes later she was back with a Spar carrier bag and two slush puppies. We could see Spar from where we were sat about 150m away. Metres, not miles that is.

A child that walks to school is more likely to carry on with an activity after leaving, than one who was ferried about in a car and went to a variety of activities.

Also oldgit, if they walk they get a sense of danger from the road. Learning how to cross properly and looking out for cycles too ( hopefully).

I'm allowed to be smug. Being a walk leader, one of my (voluntary jobs) is to try and persuade parents to walk their little darlings to and from school.

nowt to do with kids but my dad used to ( and we are talking 35/40 years ago ) get the car out of the garage to drive to the pub which was a huge estimated 400 yards walk when it was certainly quicker to walk by the time he had opened and shut the garage.
Then drive home pissed and put the car back in the garage.

TBH only a weirdo would walk 200yrds down the road, drop off the kids, walk back 200yrds, get the car, then drive back the same way again…

A normal person would drive, park, SWITCH OFF the engine, drop off the kids, then continue on his/her way in the same direction.

This reminds me of when I went to Disney in Florida a few years ago. The HUGE Americans would drive to the park, wait for a train kind of thing to ferry them from the carpark to the park gates, then they would waddle the 20yds through the gates and get on one of the mobility scooters. Thus they could drive round all day only standing up to sit down again on a ride or a restaurant chair.
And they wonder why they look like an inflatable..
