Bit of a breakthrough this week.
Got the loom fully working including the new heated windscreen.
Really satisfying wiring up a new loom section and flicking the switch without any burning smells…
Also have built a new relay junction box to hold new relays to manage all the high current stuff to the front lamps, the heated windscreen and the windscreen timing relay (orange thingy)
New intercooler and turbo hoses and I gave the intercooler a good swill out with petrol.
She’s coming back together. I can see the end in sight now.
Looking good there Stoner. Want one.
In fact we were having a chat the other day and I said I’d like a weatherproofed soft-top just for fun – she said get one then!
Shame I’ve got no spare cash 🙁
A little while ago we had a terrorism awareness presentation for work and I can’t help but notice a similarity between some of the improvised bombs we were shown and this:
That would be more up an old mate’s Street. He has half a dozen classic mercs. Including 2 former German army staff cars he imported from South Africa.
That’s very nice.
I’ve been very pleased with my x-eng security stuff nice stuff
Also think about a tracker prices are very low now
And the silly amount of. Doors and bonnets getting stolen
A bearing hammered into the hinge bolt works very well
From experience you can safely cut the hinge and bolt heads off without damaging the pillars or doors, you then just use some molgrips on the bolt shank left. Sacrificed hinge though.
Bit of a pain given how quickly the hinges wear out mind 🙂
I dont think my bonnet would be much sought after since it has chequerplate rash and isnt a puma, but I might consider adding a bike lock to the back of it to prevent a quick get away.
Personaly I’ve not done that with my current one yet but will as soon as I fit the new hinges.
I’ve not suffered any loss as yet but does seem a problem at the moment
Maybe mine is to tatty
The bearing in bolt head is also good for ground anchor bolts
Electrics pretty much now all done.
All the MOT sparky stuff is completed and working. Two wings both refitted. The instrument panel is refitted and the looms all tidied up. Nearly all the work has finished in the engine bay – just got to bleed the clutch and brakes.
Unfortunately Ive managed to break my phone’s camera lens so dont have many pics, but have just stolen junior’s christmas present to take a few snap shots.
Yesterday and today Ive been working on the auxiliary switch bank for the spot lights, interior lights, windscreen washer, heated windscreen, USB charger and digital LED voltmeter.
Really pleased with how it’s come out. Just need to fit a relay to link the rear working lamps to the reverse gear switch line from the back of the gearbox.
While you’ve still got access why don’t you buy another one of those LR double washer jet thingies and install the two in the two lateral holes in the BH so you get four jets? The pump is more than adequate for the flow and four jets gives you a decent deluge.
I have a new wipac tank and jet – I get plenty of squirt out of the single new double jet already. But since Im not refitting the dash, I will always have access to the bulkhead to fit another later. I might even fit a third wiper box for shits & giggles 🙂
Looks good. My 6 year old son keeps asking when we can build one together, I told him a few years ago that we do one when he was a lot older….. I think he’s getting impatient!
This is a great STW thread. Keep up the good work and keep us informed. I hope to do something similar one day but I best concentrate on family finances for now. A garage I could fit a landy in would be good as well.
Seen one guy wind his pipe to the washer jets round a heater hose to try and heat the water inside it. Not sure if it did any good but he thought h t it was trick.
Stoner, what sort of extra lights are you fitting? I’ve got a couple of Hella Comet 550 (I think) square driving lamps gathering dust in the shed. They were the type used on the Camel Trophy 110 roof racks. I may still have some Cibie Turini fog lamps somewhere too.
Pete – there was a light bar that came on it when I got it. The 7″ spots were tired and the mirroring knackered but parts to repair it were impossible to find so I picked up 4 basic 55W rectangular lamps for £30 ish. Bargin. The two lamps that came on the rear were salvageable.
Checked the ol’ dear turned over yesterday and she fired second time. But Im still getting a sticky starter that might give up on me at the wrong time so Ive taken it back out and will strip and give it another going over, possibly with more lube on the drive axle. At least it’s still relatively easy to get at. Will try it one more time, and if it’s still playing up then Ill have it back out again and will find a replacement for it.
I had to drop the hitch point to match my old trailer before I replaced it’s broken suspension and raised it an extra 4″ off the deck.
TBH I really would have had this finished ages ago if I had got the galv parts back from the specialist sooner. I was hoping to get them in October/November last year. I might get the last bit back this week. 😯
Im just fiddling now as I cant finish the roof etc without the last sill part.
Towbar electrics are a disposable item like screen wash, don’t want it anywhere too inaccessible when it inevitably goes wrong.
We do a lot of ploughing with the tow bar on our 130 as it is so far back from the axle, despite the HD suspension. Often wondered about making a skid plate for it. May just be because we spend a lot of time in axle deep muck while cutting new forest tracks though, probably not a universal problem.
Timbur – all the 110’s and 130’s that Lix hired me had removeable tow bar mounts for that reason, and the little bit left had two 45* ish right angle sections coming into them to help ‘surf’ rather than ‘plough’. It leaves nice marks on rocks….
I will be removing that grey primed extension plate on the hitch so the toe ball will go up 4″ and give me a little over a foot of clearance. Not loads admittedly. Fortunately its only clay and some old stumps in the coppice so I hope not to rip the hitch off 😯
None of those cappings are galv’d this time round gti.
I know Id like to have them dipped but I just havent done it. However, I know I can get them off in less than an hour when they show signs of rust and get them done. Its not ideal and it’s not up to the quality of the rest of the build but I can only do so much. The corner cappings are painted in a simoniz “tough black” which does what it says on the tin. The tub cappings were shot blasted and then drowned in hammerite. Will see how long they last,.
Stripped the starter motor and put it back together again. Cant see why it doesnt always engage with the flywheel drive ring properly, so….
…£95 for a new starter motor on eBay. Mad not too.
Seems on the LR forums, everyone has “spare parts” starters in their sheds. Obviously another Solihull consumable 😉
