Hyundai Tucson like the look of the 2.0L diesel Auto can pick them up under £5000

don’t they have an appalling NCAP rating?

I looked at a couple last year. They have a reputation for being a bit heavy for their size, so you might find you need to really floor it to make much progress.

For me the bigger concern was the driving position. Try as might, I couldn’t get the seat comfortable; the biggest problem being that I was way too high, peering down through the windscreen.

Not sure about Tucson but just got the Terracan. 2.9 CRDT Auto.

Having worked on a joint venture with hyaundai’s construction division, I wouldn’t touch one with a bargepole. A fuel tank that leaked when filled above 3/4 full was nothing to be concerned about as “8 out of the 10 on site do that”. “Leave the ignition on when you fill it so you can read the fuel gauge” was the official response. Luckily we weren’t driving anywhere dangerous like a live refinery, or in a country with the second highest road fatality rate in the world…

Used to get very very cheap 6 month leases on Hyundai in a previous job so we’ve had most of the model range. Between the SantaFe and the Tuscon, the Tuscon felt like it would be better offroad (not that it ever did more than cross a grassy field) in all other respects the SantaFe was a far superior vehicle (55 vintage) overall very good cars tho.

The only Hyundai I have driven was a hire car. A Hyundai Accident.

I cannot think of anything worse than driving such a spiteful machine. Vile, vile, vile.

Buy a second hand proper car.

I had a 54 plate Tucson bought from new. A 2.0 CRDT CDX. It was ace. Miss it like mad now I drive a Toyota IQ3…

and how long have you owned it ?

i had 3 torrid years with a hyundai lantra si – owned by the family since new , FSH , never wanted for anything.

still fell apart and broke down often and expensivly.

Interior was a horrible place to be despite being top of model range – i swapped it for a base model peugeot partner and considered it an incredible upgrade.

it had HGF and clutch failure at 60k when i scrapped it. (yet most of my other cars have gone on well beyond 100k with my fiesta reaching 200k+ so id doubt its my driving that caused the hyundai to fall apart.

UFG. Mine was very well equipped for the money. It even had a digital compass in the photochromatic rear view mirror! Tons of space with back seats folded. Bike straight in there. Not great on fuel though. I reckon about 28mpg around town. Better on the mway at 56mph-ish – maybe 10mpg more. Very reliable too. I enjoyed it.

So it only gave 38 mpg if you were prepared to sit at 56 and be overtaken by lorries. How did you get anywhere?

I have a 2.0 CRTD 06 plate. Bit of a tonka toy really, 5 year warranty is good too.

Driving it is not bad, not the most comfortable of seats but not bad. The 4wd works nicely on snowy roads and it goes well if you choose to give it beans.

Had the steering rack replaced under warranty a couple of years ago, not overly sure if it needed it or if the garage was nabbing parts for others, as I’d not noticed anything wrong.

Otherwise nice and no trouble. Insurance is fairly high and tax is quite pricy too, tyres tend to be average to be honest.

Recently however I’ve had a bit of an issue. seems the dual mass flywheel has gone kaput. 4×4 specialist quoted £1700 for flywheel, clutch and slave cylinder. ouch.

Hyundai dealer is doing it for £1050 much to my surprise. The dual mass flywheel are prone to buggering up, but they do a single conversion should it go which works out cheaper so I may actually get it all for under a grand. Which would be nice.

Rather not have to spend it on it though.

Aside that it’s been pretty good. great for lugging gravel and bikes around in and good for long journeys. MPG isn’t horrendous either.

One thing to look out for, the brakes are rubbish.
