  • Hydraulic Road groupset – Post Mount

Bike in need of a new groupset and i’d like hydraulic brakes at the same but everything i’ve looked at is direct mount and i don’t think they are backwards compatible.

What are my options? What would be an older groupset that include post mount that I could google?

Is for a Specialised Diverge 2015.

    Either-

Hunt out a post mount groupset.

Buy the groupset and seperate mtb post mount calipers (from same manufacturer), swap them and sell the flat mount calipers.

Buy flat to post adapters (can’t remember where from but was posted on here a while back).

If you’d consider 1x, then I got a good deal on Sram Apex 1 from r2-bike.com

Can be had with or without cranks (without called an “upgrade kit” and can be configured left or right front as needed.

Not realised MTB/Road would be cross compatible, ace!

So this SLX (https://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-slx-m7000-post-mount-brake-caliper/) would work with some 105 hoods? Yes yes, i know you said it would but i’m just checking.

Good find George but will stick 2x on the road.

EDIT: Just noticed mattbee’s reply (cheers), so you can get adaptors for flat to post. I’d not found any so my google fu is clearly lacking.

Take the opportunity to upgrade to the Hope road specific calipers, they are available in post/flat mount and are a considerable upgrade on the Shimano calipers.
They were around £65.00 each last year when i bought them.

as above if you must buy the whole group together then the best bet is to sell on the FM calipers. I’m doing an 11spd / hydraulic update via ebay at the moment so can tell you that a pair of Ultegra FM calipers go for around £50-60, 105 for £25-40.
If you can buy the transmission parts separately then this might do the job:
    https://www.bike-discount.de/en/buy/shimano-st-rs685-br-rs785-11-speed-road-disc-brake-rear-729060

Until recently there wasn’t a coherent hydraulic road groupset from Shimano anyway, the levers and calipers were non-series but aligned to the groups so for Ultegra 6800 there was the RS-685 levers and 805/785 calipers then the really ugly tiagra / 105 level RS-505 levers. Now there’s R7000 and R8000 for 105 and Ultegra. (I think)

the flat to post adapter is in this thread – not a standard part though

I have a custom steel road frame (Shand) with post mounts. In the time it went from order to arrival, the world of road groupsets shifted to flat mount!

My solution was simply to run new Ultegra R8020 shifters with “old” RS785 post mount calipers. I was advised by my LBS that they wouldn’t be compatible, but some deeper research showed that the hoses are compatible and I’ve had no issues in nearly 18 months and 3,000 miles of use.

So – to be clear – you can use newer post-mount compatible Shimano shifters with post mount calipers. Even if you can’t find older post mount Shimano Road calipers, I’d be fairly confident that you could match all their road offerings with post mount MTB hydraulic calipers so long as you check and match the correct hoses.

This will mean that you need to buy shifter and caliper separately, but I don’t think that’s a major problem.

I am about to sell a full SRAM Red Etap groupset. Covered less than 1,000kms.

    Shifters
    Post mount brakes
    175mm compact chainset
Chris King bb (standard english thread)
    Front mech
    Rear mech (short cage)
    11/28 cassette
    Chain
    Charger and batteries

Not a mark or scratch anywhere on it.

I am about to go 1 x on the road bike, hence I need a clutch mech.

    £1,000 all in.

a clutch mech is really not essential, especially on a road bike. The NW ring is the main thing that keeps your chain on so you could use your existing chainset with a single ring then just replace the chain, cassette and mech. Everything else will still work – assuming that etap can be programmed to work with a 1x

I have weighed that up. It gets a bit of bumpy road work, so the clutch is a must. Plus I would prefer the 12 speed spread for 1x.

Sure, just for info I’ve been running a 1×10 with a regular on my cross/gravel bike for about 4 years on and off road and dropped the chain once – that was only because it was gummed up with mud. It’s nice to have though.
