Anyone using them tubeless? Did you get a lot of sidewall leaks?

Tried to get them up tubeless yesterday on my mums Moustache Samedi ebike thing. Had a massive faff.

Managed to get them up eventually but noticed a lot of sidewall leaks. More sealant, more spinning, more air, spin round the block, more air, more sealant etc etc.

All in all, it took about 4 hours yesterday compared to the 10 minutes it took to get a new Dissector up on my Rise last week. At one point, I considered taking the name Badger but got there eventually.

Looks like they’re still leaking slightly through the sidewall just above the bead in a couple of sections on both tyres.

I’m not sure if it’s the tyre(s) construction? Nothing about them says they’re tubeless ready but equally, nothing says they’re not.

The tyre weren’t new, she’s been riding it (a bit) since last year but probably less than 100 miles so far. She’d picked up a couple of punctures (hence the tubeless idea) so I’m wondering if the tyre is damaged and that’s why they’re leaking?

Is it worth carrying on and hoping they seal? Needs to be as faff free as possible for her so I’m wondering whether I’d be better off sticking a pair of new tyres on instead?

You could try some Orange sealant- supposedly it deals with sidewall seepage better than most. But sounds like they’d be better off with a tube in TBH.

I couldn’t get Pythons to seal, and I use Orange Endurance sealant. I ended up using tubes until I bought new tyres.

Never had any problem at all with my Pythons but they are “tubeless ready” – just checked the Hutchinson website & whilst some are “tubeless ready” some are “tube type” so definitely not all the same.

Ah, see I wondered whether there were different types. Tubeless for aftermarket and  cheaper fitted to complete bikes. I looked through a load of retail sites but it never actually crossed my mind to check the Hutchinson website.

Reportedly, they were still inflated this morning although she didn’t actually check the pressure. Apparently they passed the thumb test which I guess is better than being totally flat.

I used Stans, how much would I have to clean the tyre/ rim if I wanted to give the Orange stuff a go?

I’ve said to reinflate them to 28-30ish and take it for a ride somewhere. If they’re still loosing a lot, I’ll buy her something else.

Expect a ‘what tyres for my mum’ thread coming soon.
