My other hobby is rallying, obviously the humble pencil is a crucial tool for a navigator or co driver (no, not the same thing), and there was subsequently on another forum I frequent a thread on pencils & pencil sharpening that was over 10 pages long, really……

Surely he has missed the most crucial part
rubbing on fine sandpaper after sharpening to create a chisel edge for improved accuracy
(I’m assuming this as I lost interest when he got a pencil sharpener out instead of a blade)

I reckon he could get some business off some of the people on here.

The crazy thing is this guy actually does sharpen pencils for a living at $35 each and even has a book on Amazon about it!!

I can’t believe I got 1.38 into it last night (before pulling the eject button), and he still hadn’t sharpened a pencil!

I’ve just bought it for my stepdad for Christmas.

Even if it had been completely straight, I’d still have bought it for him!

It’s just a fairly elaborate, though thinly veiled, satire on American micro-businesses who take themselves way too seriously.

Been using him for years. Wouldn’t let anyone else near my pencils.

Christ, no wonder it wasn’t in the least bit funny…

    IS THIS A JOKE?

If you start a pencil-sharpening business, you can expect to hear this question a lot. The short answer? No, this is not a joke. You pay David Rees money and he sharpens your pencils. It actually happens. [/i]

Er, maybe it is funny now.. I confoozed.

If anyone is daft enough to send him $35 to sharpen a pencil, why wouldn’t he take it?

I’m an anal pencil sharpener – I didn’t like the aesthetic of his finished pencil. The knife strokes weren’t to my taste and I couldn’t live with the smudged graphite on the wood.

I like his bench though. I’d have that.

Full marks for taking the joke to the nth degree. Great deadpan delivery. I enjoyed.

It is a joke – the fact he makes money out of the joke doesn’t make it any less of a joke.

DezB – go on Amazon, read a couple of pages of his book, and then tell me he’s serious. I particularly liked the appendix on ‘Wines that Taste Like Pencils’, and his warm-up exercises for pencil sharpening.
