2 in 37 years. Once on a motorbike (90 on a motorway) and once in a 30 (not slowing down soon enough entering a village). That last one was 26 years ago.

same here and I drive between 30-50K a year (it is just dumb luck though, not though adherence to the laws of the land) 😀

1 in 15, SP30 86mph in a 70, coming downhill past QECP. Must have got loads from that camera van, I wasn’t the fastest thing on the road by a long shot.

i was caught earlier this year (45 in a 30) 3 lane carriageway.

I was caught and i took the punishment like a man. 3 points and £60 fine, 5 weeks later i received a letter saying i had not handed my Licence in to the police station (i had) Long story short. They lost my licence and decided to re-imburse me the £60, knock the points off and give me £20 for a new Licence.

i also got caught on the a31 89 in a 70 i was sent to a speeding lesson for that.

Two SP30s in 27 years. Last one was about 13 years ago.

Used to get stopped fairly regularly in the early nineties when I was driving a modified Golf GTI (too low and too loud were the usual reasons but never got done for anything!) .

Once got stopped because the officer “thought my tyres were illegal”. Now funnily enough they were all brand new – less than a week old. The traffic officer then proceeded to go over my car in incredible detail looking for problems. He couldn’t find anything wrong and he allowed me to be on my way.

His parting words were “Well don’t do it again”. As I was driving a perfectly legal car in a perfectly legal manner I still wonder exactly what it was that I shouldn’t do again.

(*does anyone else get flashed by the driver behind for sticking to a 30? or overtaken, in a 30?)

    frequently 🙁
not just 30s either. 20s, 40s, 50s, NSL too. Then of course when the limit changes, you either catch up with them, or they carry on at whatever speed they’d been doing before.

flip the coin though, ever been held up by someone doing say 45 in a 60, then when you get to a 40 & they carry on still at 45?

    🙂 Always!

Try driving a van for a while. You’re limited to 50mph on single carriageways and you get artics and coaches flash at you for not going fast enough.

1 in 13 years, about 7 years ago. SP50 on the M4. Speed limit changed from 70 to 50 and I backed off, slowing down and then see a van on a bridge going over the motorway. Got a nice letter from the Gwent Constabulary saying I’d been going 57 in a 50. 3 points, £60 fine.

I too hate it when someone is pootling along at 40 in a national then stay at 40 when the limit changes to 30. Makes my blood boil. So much more dangerous to be speeding in a 30 than driving near or just over the speed limit in a national.

I had zero tickets in the UK (12 years driving cars & motorbikes). Since I left I’ve had >15 (lost count). Had them here in Belgium (plenty), Switzerland, Austria, Germany, France, Netherlands…. 😳

The costs are quite low, and without a points system (no totting up ban) it’s worth the risk. I have to drive lots around Europe for my work (mostly DL) & to be honest I generally just go with the flow (fast flow). Poor excuse perhaps.

A lot when I was young and mad, way back 30 odd years ago when you got endorsements rather than points I had 8 or 9 of them continually.
In the end my dad persuaded me that I was probably better off racing my motorbikes rather than riding them on the road.

One of my mates actually had 32 endorsements on his licence at one point – we were bad 😀

    nothing since 1985 though

0 in 23 yrs driving, passed test when i was 17 and bought a mini cooper with holes in the floor from the garage i served my apprenticeship at. Owned proper fast cars for the past 20 starting out when i was 22 with a lancia delta integrale i bought as damaged repairable and rebuilt the back end and ran that for a few years, never crashed a car on the road (loads on the track and barrel rolled a mk2 bda escort at 90mph in the forest – walked away with a broken finger) though never had a bump nor any insurance claim that was my fault, i save my speed for the track, i have an inherent distrust of every car on the road so i drive with the consideration that everyone else on the public road is out to kill me.

if the police were to enforce the speed limits on dual carriageways, and single lane roads for HGV’s ,vans –it would be meltdown.

Every HGV is exceeding the limit (50) on the dual carriageway by me, on trunk roads they rarely stick to 40– as druidh says 50 in a sprinter van will seem very slow!

First one was in 1995, 90 in a 70, 3 points & £40 fine. Then earlier this year, 39 in a 30, speedawareness course, no points.

    After 1 night in Manchester.

    I was Charged with.

    ( furious driving ) 5 points

    ( refusing to give a specimen ) 8 pts

    IN 10 ( no insurance ) 6 pts

    MS 30 x 2 ( street offence ) 4 pts

    MS 50 ( racing on a public highway ) 4 pts

MS 90 ( refusing to identify another driver ) 6 points

    SP 30 x 3 6 pts.

Obligatory 4 year ban with compulsory advanced re-test plus a £3000 fine.

Then in 98 on a 1000cc EXUP, I overtook and then Raced a car and a motor bike over the cat and fiddle ( Both were braking the speed limit at the time ) up and across long hill into whaley bridge, when i got to the roundabout the road was blocked.

Turned out to be 3 of duty police officers.

    Multiple speeding charges

    lots of TS 20,s

And another 3 yr ban + £800 fine.

Never drove or ridden a motorbike on the road since,

But on a good note i do have quite a few bikes.

You have to be blind, stupid or careless to drive with so little observation that your speeding and not able to see camera, car following etc…

Don’t have a completely clean sheet though: I pulled out in front of a cement mixer in 2001 though, completely wrote off the car and was lucky to walk away. The mixer driver maintained he was doing less than 30. He appeared suspiciously quickly on a completely empty road for someone who wasn’t speeding, but never mind. I was charged with careless driving but the charge was dropped when I agreed to go on one of the test runs for the driver awareness courses they offer for less serious stuff nowadays.

3 points 22 years ago for crossing over a double white line with the osf wheel while going round a corner, and told off for having wheels which were wider than the car (was a yoof with spacers and wide wheels!). nothing since (well a very suspicious looking drug cop at Bilbao port but that another story). never been caught speeding tho!

Me – 3 times in 23 years, the worst oh which was 96 in a 50 on the A9 (although I am still convinced it was actually a 60) £300 fine and 6 points for that one. I was young and stupid and thought Edinburgh to Skye and back in the day, with a 4 hour meeting in the middle was a good idea. Steady boring eddy now!

0 in 14 years, i do about 130k a year (long distance coach driver)
did get stopped for ‘unusual riding’ once, had a copper follow me through 3 towns on my bike, id spotted them so kept EXACTLY to all speed limits (in 1st gear all the way too) eventually they got bored and pulled me.
apparently a biker not speeding is highly unusual.
EDIT: i dont normally speed much, i dont actually believe it saves much time.

Aged 18, In a knackered looking mk1 ford fiesta which I had just finished a rebuild to the engine to make it sing, I was stopped doing 120 mph, they found a shotgun in my boot and for some strange reason they did not book me for speeding 😉

Sold the car afterwards, last time I messed with speeding on the road, lesson learnt

Just keep yer hands on the wheel, laddie. ;O)

Zero in 28 years. Including 10 years commuting 30,000 miles pa.

Of course there was the time, very early on a Saturday morning on the M6 toll when I went around the corner at about 90-ish, to see three police cars pulling people over. I escaped on the grounds that they had already apprehended three cars, and I was the fourth (lucky, as my wife never forgets to remind me).

    You obviously missed:

I think it’s because I’ve only ever driven cars that have a special dial that tell you what speed you’re doing

    15 or so posts earlier.

Personally 2 in 26 years. Both forward facing mobile ones over the brow of a hill that you would have needed x-ray eyes to see before they nabbed you – clearly I’m not as awesome as stufield.

None in 23 years, although I’ve been caught speeding twice.
First one was 110 on the M6 in the mid ’90’s. The policeman gave me a right bollocking and then let me off with a warning.
Second one was 45 through 30mph roadworks with a sign that said “speed cameras to protect road workers”. It was a Saturday and nobody was working so my notice of intended prosecution was rescinded.
I generally tootle around the place nowadays.

You mean I can ignore temporary roadworks speed limits if they have a sign saying that? 😯 (given that most of the time I drive through is at weekends when nobody is working)
