how many mm below top cap…………

………….. is it safe to have the top of your steerer tube?

I’ve got a bit of fairly critical fork fitting going on – reckon top of steerer will be 3 – 5 mm below the cap, with no spacers

none the stem should be above the steerer or else the top cap wont be a pinch bolt it will just be there to stop your stem falling off when it works loose !!!!!gat a space place above stem if height is critical

3-5 mm should be OK, as long as both the stem pinch bolts are clamped around the steerer tube.
If the stem bolt was above or overlapping the top of the steerer I would be wary of riding it! hope that makes sense.

sorry – didn’t quite follow that! I think we are saying the same thing – my Q was how many mm below the top of the stem should the steerer be? I think 3 to 4 mm is probably okay, but not much more than that. If steerer is above stem, either need to cut or add apacer above

I’d have said a few mm should be OK as well. The steerer on my old fork was pretty much set up like that – i.e. the top of the steerer was about 3mm below the top of the stem.

As oggles said, so long as it’s not so short that both stem bolts don’t tighten around it, you should be good to go.

thread overlap – oggles, yes I’m with you, what I thought; junkyard was the one i’ve got my wires crossed with!

get iot now – 3- 5 mm and ensure stem bolts actually tightening below steerer as other say – sounds liek it will be ok

3-5mm should be fine.

You’ll need a few mm clearance for the headset top cap, otherwise it’ll foul the steerer tube and you wont be able to tighten up the headset enough.
