You said it, I was simply asking, i’ll stop if it it’s upsetting you though.

As it happens, you were spot on, after a little googling, it appears that the EDL are an Anti-Islamic group rather than White Supremacists.

No I didn’t say that either. You are the most prolific mis-quoter known to STW. And for that I claim my fiver (whatever that means).

    Keep going though.

You are the most prolific mis-quoter known to STW

It is a hotly contested title.

(and as it happens, you were absolutely right to pull whether the EDL are a White Supremacist group, was what I meant.)

And a real accolade. You’re on-course for other titles aswell, keep it up.

it does upset me to see them become so unhappy when they read the mail

Thats what makes people happy though – people have an insatiable appetite for the notion that things are getting worse. It what they want to read.

The thing to keep in mind with the Mail and the right wing media generally – is that many of their readers are left of centre voters. Half of the Mail’s readership vote labour / liberal. Of the 10 major papers 7 have rightwing editorials, but we’re a socialist country, even when we have minority rightwing government.

It’s not what makes my grandparents happy though, which was my point.

I had a sixth form Economics teacher who read the daily mail, He advocated that reading a paper you dissagreed with was the best for developing your mental faculties and making you think.

    Exactly.

I read either the Indy (which does what it says on the tin, but is very, very boring indeed), or the Telegraph, which gives me a very good idea of how the enemy thinks and behaves.
    Good sports coverage too.
Their spoof reporter Bryony Gordon is hilarious – bit obvious though, as if anyone would give a job to such a vaccuous, airheaded non-entity in real life.

As for the Mail – it panders to and reinforces the opinions of those sad, nasty, small minded, interfering, paranoid, hate filled Little Englanders who are bloody proud that they exemplify the worst traits of humanity. 🙂
And for all those on this thread who read, enjoy and believe what it prints, that’s you, btw. 😀

Having not visited the forum or posted for a while I’m pleased to see the leftwing bigotry, and yes you can be bigoted its not an exclusively rightwing position, is going strong. Do you not think that assuming you have the right to tell anyone what they can/cannot, should/shouldn’t read is just a little bit oppressive? Some might even say fascist……. I’m sure the Nazis burned books and banned newspapers

The DM is available everyday in my house, its crap but then so are most of the tabloids including the mirror, but its worth buying to listen to the stream of outrage from my 17 year old daughter when she reads it 😀

As for the OP FunkyDunc hit the nail on the head

When i was in college living in a hostel, one of the lads used to read the Daily mail, one day one of the madder lads set it on fire as he read it, and anyone who remembers the Bonaza opening titles, and Road runner, as he realised his paper was on fire will understand.

He never read it again in public, and we got a serious telling off for starting a fire.

gweilo, newsflash!! There is a hitherto hidden “2nd axis” of politics. 😯 and indeed 😉

…which means you can be both lefty and heavily interventionist at the same time.

I would love to know if the STW masseev feels that there is a difference bvetween the scientific misinformation and “advice” propagated by various religions and the scientific misinformation and “advice” propagated by the Mail. Hopefully being concerned about this does not make me overly authoritarian.

I don’t have a problem with anyone reading the mail, as long as they don’t have a problem with me kicking the shit out of next person who treats my family badly because of their origins.

Seem like a fair trade to me 🙂

    a 2ndaxis oh bugger lol

I just completed the test and apparently I’m libertarian left….. which must be why I hate the interventionist approach 😕

I’ve passed the link to my daughter who is studying politics at A2 I’m sure her cohort will enjoy it tomorrow

As has been said earlier most of those likely to attack your family are unlikely to have the intellect to read the Mail, much more likely to be The Sun, Star or the Sport…

The view of an immigrant, my wife, on the Mail is as follows: “You have to realise its the opinion of the journalist that wrote the piece and if you cant get beyond that you should shut up as you can’t form your own opinions and have nothing to say”

    I’m not sure she’s a libertarian….

Its got to the point where he thinks im being funny as i tell him i have no interest in anything he says when it starts “I read…….” knowing that it will be from that rag not worthy of wiping your arse on.

he’s trying to bond with you and take your relationship to a more intelligent level..
he needs you to challenge him as he’s worried that you’re too absorbed in Corrie and X Factor..

He needs to know that you care enough..

Get thyself round to his gaff immediately with a big bottle of grog, stick some tunes on, get the old fella royally pissed and then wrestle in the garden, before getting a taxi into town for coke, hookers and a punch-up with some students in the kebab shop..
then you can get home and do lines of dodgy chaplin and rant ecstatically together til dawn about what you would do if it was you and yer pa in the coalition..

it’s your duty as a son, don’t ignore his cry for help… he’s lonely and he misses you, misses your innocence, misses rocking you to sleep in his arms

gosh I do hate politics, just let folks do their own thing as long as it’s legal and among consenting adults it’s no-one else’s business.

Also worth bearing in mind that politics stems from Poly -meaning many and Ticks- pointelss blood sucking parasites. 😆

It certainly has its place. It gives me great pleasure coming on here and seeing how many lefty/attention seekers its wound up 🙂
