How do I know what type of forks will fit my frame.

Hi, I have a 2005 GT Avalanche 1.0 sitting in the garage in disrepair. I have decided to strip it back to the frame and upgrade the parts. 2 initial questions but as with the Cotic build earlier this year I am sure I will have plenty more.
1. I have heard that some frames don’t take certain fork types. How do avoid an expensive mistake in ths area?
2. Hose length for hydraulic brakes, how do you determine the length required? I am buying 2nd hand so need to know what will work.

If its a 2005 chances are the forks will be standard 1/18 size, ie not tapered, or 1.5″..

As for hose length, chances are if you’re buying 2nd hand, they will be long enough as the previous owner won’t have cut them too short.

Is there any way of telling whether it’s standard or tapered?

According to CaneCreek its a standard headtube – headset:

It won’t be tapered, but if it was the bottom of the headtube would be wider than the top. pretty sure that frame is only going to be rated for 100mm travel forks as well.

You’ll be able to tell by looking at the steerer or asking the seller.
I think the fork length will be an issue to, the frame will have been designed to take certain fork lengths.

The fork coming off is a really pants suntour thing which is about as much use as a chocolate fire guard. Was thinking a max of 120.

It was a Halfords purchase so the parts are different than those stated ont interweb. 100mm it is then.

I didn’t know Halfrauds do that!? outrageous!

Should be OK with a 120mm s long as crown to axle is increased too much.
