  • Hope Pro 2 vs XC – Flange dimensions & spoke length
  • I am thinking of jumping on the 20mmt front axle bandwagon, and so need a new front hub as well. I currently have a Hope XC. If I change to a Pro 2, are the flanges the same dimensions as the XC, or will I need new spokes?

    Cheers,

the dt swiss calculator should have them on,

    http://www.dtswiss.com/SpokesCalc/Welcome.aspx?language=en

set your wheel up as it is, work out the length, and then swap the hub and recalc it.
i reckon you should be ok?

    but check….

    It’s all on here:

But short answer – different. To be honest you should be using new spokes anyway.

    New spokes
you might be as well to buy a new wheel and sell the old one.
check out the spoke calculator on the DT swiss web site

where’s Musson when you want him?

iirc his book says that if you trust the original build, and the spokes are the right length and not cracked or scraped by your chain, then there isn’t much reason not to re-use the spokes. He says he doesn’t re-use other peoples’ spokes cos he has a business to run and a reputation to uphold but would reuse his own.

Or £15 for 36 dt stainless double butted at CRC is also nice.

If you do reuse them, remember to separate the ‘inside’ ones from the ‘outside’: the ones that pass from the inside of the flange and exit on the outside will have an extra bit of ‘bend’ as they double back on themselves slightly when built.

Whats this obsession with new spokes? I’ve re-used spokes on 2 consecutive wheels with no problems?

Yeah, but were you replacing the hub or the rim. I wouldn’t think twice about reusing the spokes if in good condition with a new rim. But swapping the hub? I’d probably just go for new ones while I was at it.

That said…yeah probably fine, if the lengths work out ok. If you do it then Julian’s advice sounds good.

Both, I tend to “recover” spokes from wheels I pull apart and leave them in a box labeled and sized, then re-use at a later date when I need to. Only the decent quality ones, the old straight-gauge cheapo ones I just bin.
