So, I fitted new pads (genuine Hope as always) the same way as I have dozens of times since I got them 4 years ago. Pushed the pistons back, insert new pads, put wheel in and pump lever until it goes hard. So why this time do the brakes bind? Even went out for a ride in the hope they might sort themselves out. Brakes work well but still bind. Any ideas?

Sticky piston syndrome? When (if ever) did you last strip and clean the pistons and seals?

Did you pump the leaver with the mouthing screws slightly loose, assuming post mounts (just had similar problem and was shown this tip, bit embarrassed had not known it before)

Pistons clean and working, will try loosening mounting bolts.

I’d suggest that your piston aren’t that clean, assuming the binding is due to them not returning properly

Try this piece of witch craft.

Pop your wheel out and put two business cards (or similar) between the pads. Push the wheel back in so there’s a card either side of the rotor. Then zip tie the brake lever back – as though you’re yanking the brake on.

Leave them like this overnight, snip the zip tie, and remove the cards.

I’ve no idea why this works – but it seems to.
