Got talked into doing this about 10 years ago and merrily turned up on 160mm enduro bike and hated every mile of it. Now gravel bikes are a thing I’m tempted to give it a go again!

I’ve done HONC on a few different bikes. When it’s dry like last year gravel bikes are a reasonable option, they’re quite a bit quicker on the road sections. But… there were a few stony farm track descents that were leaving the gravel bike riders nursing pretty sore wrists. So I reckon the best bike for the event would be an XC race bike, or the closest thing you’ve got to that. Whatever you ride though (except maybe a 160mm gnarpoon!) it’s a really nice day out.

Out of interest, what’s with the move to September?

Sod it, I’ve booked on – good excuse to put some miles in on the gravel bike. Alternative option is 170mm 29er so probably the sensible choice to take the sore wrists!
