Aquaintance A said something that could arguably be considered homophobic. [1]
Aquaintance B called him out on it.
Aquaintance A responded by saying he was Bi and therefore he couldn’t be homophobic.
Aquaintance B verbally stumbled around a bit but ultimately didn’t feel he could make his original homophobia charge stick.

I’ve no idea if Aquaintance B was telling the truth but the whole idea of there being a homophobia trump card made me smile.

[1] Whether it was or not isn’t the point.

    I like chips.

In other news, I know bi people who have a really toughtime from bi-phobic homosexuals.

Anyone can be a bigoted. Being a bigot is non-gender/race-specific. It’s called being a bigot.

Once had a heated drunken verbal debate with a ‘right-on’ type who sadly attempted to defend her argument that ‘black people can’t be racist’

I pointed out that if taken at face value, then her argument was the very definition of ‘racist’. Beer had been im ibed so this went back and fortha bit. I eventually dismissed the argument as was getting nowhere. In hindsight I think she erroneously believed that ‘racism’ was defined solely as ‘white people being prejudiced towards ‘black’ people’. As if all ‘black people’ are the same ‘race’. Or that no white person can be ‘racist’ against another white person. Like Germans vs Poles for instance.

    Ye gods humans are stupid.

I guess it is a similar argument as the one I posted about Chris Rock on Friday (and his use of the N word).

I reckon if he was really homophobic, he wouldn’t be quick to say he’s bi. Also, any hole’s a goal so get in there.

I was at a house party when I guy described a recent hilarious incident when he and a friend masturbated each other in bed. Careful not to judge we just asked if he was gay or bi, which he fervently denied. We tried to tell him it was fine if he was but he passed it off as just a bit of fun and hey “we all masturbate and suck our mates off don’t we!”.

It was a very weird conversation. He was a youngish guy, early 20s iirc maybe it was his way of testing the water about coming out. Still strange.

He might not be homophobic, but he could still say something homophobic in a moment of thoughtlessness surely?

That’s really what I started the thread to explore. Does his own background excuse a thoughtlessly homophobic comment. If it does what level of Bi-ness do you have to be for it to be ok? A currently practicing Bi person? Someone who watched Gay porn once?

What on Earth is a “currently practicing Bi person”????

Presumably he meant someone who is actively engaging in sexual relations with people of both genders.

That is an amusing lack of understanding of being Bi. It is perfectly possible to be in a monogamous relationship for many years without somehow losing your Bi sexuality.

He meant within the context of someone using his bi-sexuality as a get out of jail card for homophobic speech. It seems fairly obvious.

Indeed. In fact I’m sure there are 100pc gay people who live their whole lives in marriages with people of the opposite sex. I’m equally sure there are people who live their whole lives in a gay relationship who are 15% straight, and every combination you can think of.

I think, for a lot of people, sexuality isn’t binary.

Completely OT, but this seems to be the sexuality topic of the day and so far discussion is fairly sensible. Imagine there’s an article in the local paper about a Pride event, the picture for which is a group of people dressed in different colours forming a rainbow. All but one of the people in the picture appear to identify as female. What preconceptions would you have about the sexuality of any of the people in the photo?

It would be difficult to draw any correct conclusions. Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t subconsciously do it, though.

    Sounds a fun event! 😀
