    Dear Dr STW

Pain in right hip, feels like right in the joint/ball sore when I wake up or been lying on it. Seems to come and go. Feels fine when I ride, but other times in the day, just doing chores, pottering around the house, or at work (lots of driving and in / out of cars). I’ve not stacked, falled, doesn’t feel muscular and ibuprofen little effect. Some relief with diclofenac cream but short lived.

Family history of hip bursitis (mom). Who’s had one hip replaced already. Really bloody annoying. On/off pain. Not liking this “getting older” lark, not one bit.

Anyone else have this? Remedies or treatments that have worked? Meds that are any better or more effective than others? Not quite reaching for the oxycodone yet…

Yep, had a cortisone jab which eased it for a while, then it came back and quack (orthopaedic specialist) suggested trying physio, got some exercises to work muscles in the area and that seems to be a much better fix.

Fwiw mine was kicking around for ages before I did anything, never felt bad enough to warrant a trip to the doc, but was bad enough to wake me up in the night and make it impossible to sleep on that side.

Yes a few months ago now it was bloody sore, Cocodamol helped. mine is due to major surgery. No way could I ride a bike walking was painful enough.

I started having recognisable trouble 3 years ago (I’d struggled for power and comfort for some time before) with my hip. Bursitis was on the list of possible issues. A MR arthrogram revealed an FAI impingement. Apparently quite a common skeletal issue in men but only normally becomes a problem in active folk who trash their joint because of it.

I’m just under 4 weeks from surgery, back to work on reduced hours and using a stick. I’ve been told I’ll never run again as damage was too great to repair properly but I should bike/swim/work without discomfort again.

I would seek advice sooner rather than later and if it doesn’t respond press for a scan. If my issue had been discovered a year or two earlier (apparently premier league footballers are now scanned in their teens/early twenties as a preventative measure) my outcome would have been much better, and a year or so later and I’d have been looking at a total replacement.

Agreed though, getting older (mid 40s) sucks.

    Bugger Convert that sucks.

I’m a bit sick (sic) of going to see my doc. I’m already a T1 diabetic with an insulin pump. Speccy 4 eyes. Quit smoking and suddenly have a coeliac disease alert on my bloods (so need a small bowel biopsy) and my hip is iffy. I only turned 40 in Feb!

Perhaps I’m reading too much into the “well my mom has it so…”type of thinking. It has got colder her, and damper. Seems to coincide so perhaps some early arthritic type pain? I’ll give it a week or two. Minimal use of the drugs for now and see what happens. Interestingly, there’s no pain/ache when I cycle!

Drac – I really don’t do well with cocodomol. We have pandeine here – same same but the codeine blocks me up.

    Ahh shoot me now! :/

Go see your Dr as I wouldn’t be taking ibuprofen too regular if you have intestinal issues.

Typical blokey attitude tho “if it aint fallin off it’s probably ok”.

When you have the tiniest of creek on your bike it’s a full strip, regrease and replace all parts and bearings.

brufen only helps a bit and i dont want to wake up and feel like i need to be dropping it pre-emptively to get me through the day (but i do carry it with me incase i need it!)

Only had elbow variety, was bad enough I could have cried at times. Forgot to declare the pencilin allergy to the doctor, got prescription drugs to remedy, got the s*its, this was the day before I had to do the 3 peaks on foot. It wasn’t an easy couple of days!
