Looking for something I can watch tonight with a couple of beers, rental from itunes (or other official online source).

Something with a bit of action and comedy, well scripted but slipped below the radar, considering “hunt for the wilderspeople”, which I do want to watch but not sure I am in the mood for that particular film tonight. What are your recommendations?

Romancing the Stone. A bit of action and a bit of comedy, a film about a hidden gem?

    Ok, maybe not.

I have to say I agree with Kermode about Pain & Gain, and I only watched 20 mins of it, in fact his review is far more interesting than the film could ever dream of being.

I have watched, the guard and kiss kiss bang bang, and enjoyed them both. God bless America, would be another that I have also seen but is the kind of thing I fancy watching.

Men from uncle took me 3 sittings to actually finish watching it, very meh.

Good bye Lenin is looking most likely at the moment, linked with run lola run on IMDB which is a fantastic film.

    Deadpool a hidden gem???

+1 for Bone Tomahawk although there is no comedy. Blue juice is a classic and if you’re considering Hunt for the Wilderpeople, What We Do In The Shadows is a brilliant film by the same director.

    kiss kiss bang bang,

Beat me to it. Probably the best action comedy I’ve seen. You could check out Shane Black’s follow – Nice Guys. I haven’t seen it myself yet though.

Agree about Pain and Gain. Wretched shit.

    The Guard is brilliant.

Recently enjoyed Blue Ruin, a kind of anti-revenge movie which I’d highly recommend.

As soon as I saw the thread title I was going to recommend Hunt for the WIlderpeople….

So I’ll instead recommend the following –
    Machete.

    A most violent year.

Not a happy ending in sight, it’s gritty & a bit coarse, but I really liked it. The setting, early 80’s New York; is just excellent.

+1 Captain Fantastic, some great acting and leaves more engrossing questions than it answers. A funny, sad, enraging and captivating ride of mundane to sublime fancy. Wholly original.

Edit : ^ A Most Violent Year was also great. Excellent acting, Tom Hardy put me in mind of a younger De Niro. Not saying too much as spoilers are easily stumbled upon.

Something I didn’t expect to enjoy too much was ‘Florence Foster Jenkins’. Sad, comical and true. An ‘against all odds’ biopic drama superbly played by Streep. She really is amazingly funny and touching in this role.

My last recommendation is ‘Robot & Frank’. Grumpy old guy with a house/care robot. Brilliant stuff. Novel, unsentimental and well-played. This definitely fits ‘hidden gem’ IMO.

    A Most Violent Year

Does Tom Hardy gruffly mumble his way through?

I am now considering high rise (fails on the comedy front)

I watched ‘All is Lost’ on Film 4 the other night – quite gripping and wanted to give the guy a hug towards the end.

He’s not in the cast as far as I remember, the male lead’s Oscar Isaac. Jessica Chastain is excellent too.

The Skeleton Twins is good if you want something small-scale and indie. It’s funny but there’s not much action. Just turned up on Netflix.

Yeah, sorry about that, I must have been checking out a few films on IMDB at the same time and got the cast lists mixed up.

As recommended on page one – Nice Guys is a great film and fits your remit OP. Robot and Frank is a corker of a film and also has Liv Tyler in it which is always a bonus.

A hidden Gem, that is so hidden I have not been able to see it for years.

Eat the Peach……There really should have been a sequel

Any ideas were to find it would be good.

Eat the Peach Wiki…may be a reminder to those that have seen it.
