Hi – looking for first bike
-
flyguywhyFree Member
Hi guys an gals.
I’m new round here so thought I would introduce myself and see if I can get some advice as my mate reckoned this was a good place and said most people are friendly (but apparently there are a few dick heads on here lol)
Got myself a boardman HT!?!? from the children at halfrauds but dont really like it as I find it to tough and I have lower back problems. Anyway I popped into a bike shop close to me and had a chat with some guy and he recommended either a specialized stumpjumper evo carbon thing (which was nice if a little heavy) or a White!? 146 which again was nice and didnt seem as heavy.
So I was wondering what people thought and if there is anything else I should look at? I’ve been to swinley forest a few times and seen the guys there dressed up and seen some big drops which I wouldnt mind having a go at so I figure having back suspension as well as front is a good idea.
Also the guy in the shop said that while Im deciding I could get some bigger tyres which will make my bike better and recommended some maxis swampthings (i think) as its muddy. Are these ok? or should I look at something else?
Cheers for any help it’ll be really appreciated.
alfabusFree Memberassuming you are not a troll (which is quite some assumption… is it your first bike you’re looking for, or your second?)
how about a boardman FS… seems like a much more sensible step than dumping multiple £thousands on a carbon spesh.
and no, you don’t want swampthings.

z1ppyFull Member^ what he said +1
Spending thousands on a carbon bike would be great but down right silly until you happy with what mtb-ing is to you (hense the trolling comment above).
Some fatter (2.3-2.4) tyres might be enough to take some of the sting out of your current ride though.
No to the swampy’s, get some Bontrager Mud-x if you want mud tyres
(these are in no way fatter though, bloody tiny compared to my 2.2 tyres).flyguywhyFree MemberHi guys thanks for the help Im a little new to this internet forum lark (always thought it was geeks like you see on TV). Need to learn to structure my questions better.
I suppose its my second bike Im after alfabus. Im not too bothered about spending a bit of money on a bike thing is im not too impressed with the halfruds guys they didnt really seem to know what they where talking about (saying that I think the guy in the bike shop saw my Audi and thought I would be an easy target to get loads of money out of me)
So how much should I be spending on a bike then Im looking for something with front and back suspension.
Re the tyres what should I get instead.
Thanks
P.s. whats a troll?
flyguywhyFree Memberwhy’s that? ive just got myself a new rs6 very chuffed with it, I had it out for the first day reckon the guy thought I was going to buy something there and then.
z1ppyFull MemberNobby Nic’s seem a popular choice tyre wise, but lots of other are avaiable… Maxxis High roller, Continental Rubber queen (black chilli)
BTW you are either a really crap troll (trolls are supposed to be subtle and not just burst there façade in the 1st post) or a real newbie who just has managed to press all the stw troll alarm buttons (some hilarious ppl think they so cool post troll threads).
MulletusMaximusFree MemberHow much you spend is down to you. What you really need to determine is what sort of riding you’ll mostly be doing.
If it’s the occasional trip to Swinley with most riding on bridleways then a 6″ travel bike won’t necessarily be the best option.
If you’re unsure when going into a shop to buy a bike the chances are you will choose the wrong one.
Research is key imo.

Hmmmm, trail centre stereotype. 😉 😆
flyguywhyFree Memberzippy thats some funny reading no wonder my mate recommended this forum reckon I’ll fit in a treat.
Iv heard of the rubber queen the guy at halfords reckoned they were good but I was a bit put off paying £20 for a bike tyre.
Mulletus Maximus thanks for the extra input by riding what do you mean? My mate said something about aggresive all freeride!>!? Does that sound right he said I could tag along to the ‘fod’ next week.
z1ppyFull MemberI was a bit put off paying £20 for a bike tyre.
£20 is cheapish nowadays… check out how much the ”black chilli” (super sticky) version are… BTW the 2.2 are plenty wide enough.

😆 😆
flyguywhyFree Memberzippy thats just silly for a bike tyre its not like people on bikes go very fast is it so why so expensive? surely its just the same as the one in halfords.
So a 2.2 tyre is worth getting then?
On a side note that sites pretty good and a lot cheaper than that bike shop I went into is it any good or is it a scam? I see its in ireland do things actually arrive or do you just end up with a potato lol.
flyguywhyFree MemberMulletus I can see where my money is going with a bike you can see the carbon and titanium a bit of rubber well its a bit of rubber why dont they just make them like motorbike tyres but a bit thinner.
z1ppyFull Member
Nope ppl don’t go fast, admittedly most might not go as fast as Danny.
2.2 Nobby’s and Rubber queen are fine by me & as fat as I want to go, others disagree.
as for crc, nowt wrong with them, assuming they take your vouchers:

MulletusMaximusFree MemberSurely you’re a troll. Who’s your mate that recommended this site?
flyguywhyFree Memberzippy that looks really good fun Is that downhill?
Mulletus why am I a troll so I may conform to a few social stereotypes but everyone has to start somewhere when gathering information and my mate reckoned this was a good site. His names Mike not sure of his surname (as I know him from climbing). He said most people are pretty good on this site but there are a few retards too (dont tell me they all drive audis lol)
z1ppyFull Memberyes, as per the video title… anyway gotta go, dog wants walking and I have to make at least one of my bikes work before tomorrow.
unklehomeredFree MemberI’ve heard of the rubber queen
😯 I haven’t, do tell…
Tyres, as you’ll find out if you survive this initial flaming, are an incredibly personal and oft discussed topic. Good ones go for 35 – 50 new, each. Yes that is silly, but it seems to be where we are, Mountain kings are a good all weather tyre that do pretty much everything.
Thing is you won’t really know what you want until you’ve ridden a bit. The guys in shops sound to have been trying to milk you of your money a little. I don’t know how bad your back probs are but maybe some exercises to stregthen your lower back muscles bufore you fork out cash on a bike. I have low back issues, but hasn’t bothered me on a bike for many years now following the above.
v666ernFree Memberflyguywhy,
You can hire bikes at the FOD and see what suits you best, it may turn out that your not into freeride and prefer xc
id suggest trying the trek remedy and see how that suits you
some more info on the fod is here
ignore the baffoons…but out of interest do you work in IT? 🙄
McHamishFree MemberI’d follow yunki’s advice if I was you…those bikes are usually half price too.
What’s the etiquette for trolling? If you continue with the ruse after someone suggests you’re a troll other forum members will have to start offering real advice.
A good troll should include clever hints to your real identity. Immersing yourself fully into your character is no fun at all.
However, as far as I can tell…Halfords don’t stock Specialised…which would be a good clue as to the authenticity of this post.

McHamishFree MemberI stand corrected.
Perhaps me not reading his post thoroughly puts me in the ‘retard’ group of forum users referred to in this thread.
I don’t think I’m in the ‘dick head’ group yet, although using the term ‘retard’ should give immediate membership of the ‘dick head’ gang! So at least I wouldn’t be alone!
mboyFree MemberGiven the ridiculous stereotyping the OP is displaying, I desperately want him to be real, it would be so funny! I fear though that he is almost certainly a troll (apologies if you’re not OP).
Should the OP not be a troll (nice car by the way!), then as has been said already, you need to have a think about what kind of riding it is you’re going to be doing. No offence, but I’d bet your Audi you’re not going to be taking Danny Hart on at DH racing, so you’re more likely looking at general XC and trail riding (call it what you will). The Boardman you have already is not a bad bike, but if it doesn’t suit you then you’re right to look elsewhere. Full suspension can help those with back problems, though to be fair so can sorting the back problems out at a Chiropractor, or going down the gym and building some core strength as I found out to my benefit! I’d definitely try and hire a couple of bikes first, or even better, get demo rides on them, the world it literally your oyster and if you have no idea what you want, get and sample a few to help you start to narrow your decision!
BTW, if you’ve no problems with spending several thousands on a bike, but you baulk at £20 on a tyre, you’ve got your priorities very wrong! I doubt you’ll be fitting remoulds to your RS6 (20″ rims n’est pas? 275 wide iirc), the same applies for cycling. There are some exceptions to the rule, but in general, you spend more you get higher performance back, though sometimes the law of diminishing returns also applies. Personally, even though they’re bloody expensive, I think the 2.2″ Black Chilli Rubber Queens are one of the best performance upgrades most people could make to their bikes, the tyres really are that good! And in contrast, the cheaper ones are made from a nasty compound that doesn’t grip very well by comparison. The only contact patch the bike has with the ground are the tyres, skimp on these, and you might as well be riding an Apollo that cost you £99!
