I’m going for the first time. Currently deciding whether to put the mud-x tyre back on the rear. I doubt that’ll make much difference to my overall performance though…

    GPX routes are now out.

Can anyone recommend a pub for lunch? 45-50km into the 75km loop would be ace 🙂

    Hi Ciderinsport

At that distance, you’ll be at Hunters’ Hall in Kingscote. If you’re hungry earlier than that, the Rose & Crown in Nympsfield is only 1km off the track (near the top end of Woodchester Park) or, failing that, the Ram Inn at Woodchester is also near (at the bottom end of Woodchester Park). I’ll be marshalling the gate at the bottom of Woodchester Park, if you want any directions, stop and have a chat!

Also, thinking about it, the Britannia Inn in Nailsworth is also good for food, you’ll be riding straight past it on the route

    Thanks for the info!

Looking forward to the ride 🙂

Yup. 5 of us going. Promise myself not to do the Rolla wotsit challenge (or the new for 2013 virtual surf challenge) this year after 7 pints.

Any tyre recommendations from people that have done it previously or know most of the course? How does it compare to HONC (where the off-road bits aren’t technical and are fine on a CX bike)? Can’t decide whether to run a low tread rear to help with the road sections or if that would make the off-roads a nightmare.

Didnt want to turn this into a what tyres for………………..

But most of the trails are similar to HoNC when they are bedrock but i thought about using my cross bike but its a fair bit rougher than HoNC and there is some nice descents which i think will be more fun on a (real bike)

Went out last night very close to but not on the course and the local trails by me have held up very well after the downpours this week but its been dry all yesterday afternoon until now.

So there might be some muddy bits but i certainly wouldnt run a mud tyre.

See you all Saturday i’ll be the one with the insanely skinny legs in a Fat Bike sandwich 😀

You mean you’ll be the one in front of the gaggle of three fatbikes. 😉

Tyre wise i’ll be using 4″s back and front.

    What a great event again.
Nice trails, not too many people and free cider at the bottom of the last climb. 😀

    Brill ride. Great organisation.
I think I worked out why there was very few Single speed, rigid bikes at about the 60k mark. Just glad it was dry….

Were you the guy on the black Monkey that came over to chat to the fatbike trio before the start?

    Superb weekend!

I made new best friends with the cider makers 🙂

Al and his team are wonderful! And all that money to charity, excellent!

Us big bike bash lot will be back next year! With our music 😉

Oh, and happy to roll home with the fat bike folk – you were epic!

I asked you to turn it up twice 😀

Agree with all the above, great weekend. Loved it 8)

Glad you enjoyed the weekend, guys, always nice to see people having fun! I think that the 7 barrels of beer and two massive cider vats that got emptied had something to do with it.

We’ll be launching our autumn event, the “Southern Heartbreaker”, in a month or two – this is an end-of-season competition based in Breakheart Quarry (the place where the water stop was at around the 25km mark this year). If you’re on the HOTS mailing list you’ll get a message.

Hope to see you all again next year!

Really enjoyed the whole shebang – lovely riding with lots of variety, inc some great rolling woody singletrack, that lunar-landscape quarry section and scooting past the golf course, flapjacks, helpful marshals, beer on tap, relaxed atmosphere…
Already talking about doing the 75 next year now I know the 50 is doable 🙂
    Thanks to everyone involved.

    Stu,
Yes, that was me. I decided against riding my SS Pugsley and opted for a more “sensible” bike….

I think an ss fatbike round that course might be a bit too much.

I think a geared fatbike was a bit too much round that course 🙂

Really enjoyed that to, much more MTB friendly course than HONC. I under-estimated how tough the first half would be though and was ruined from the first feed stop on, not even cider on the last climb could dull the pain in my legs :p Def be back next year (and taking it easier at the start!). At least I passed the fat bikes once (at a feedstop…), they actually looked a sensible choice though on some of the loamy descents, wouldn’t have fancied one on the climbs though, did they work on the tight switch-backs in the quarry?

My first HotS, and first time riding in the area – loved it!

Must say thanks to all the marshals – they were all friendly and helpful.

Enjoyed the course too, the whole golf-course/quarry/little down hill track segment was ace fun.

we, as always, had a great time, a litlle later start for us this year (11:15!!) and drinking whilst we wait meant we were very loud and had a small audience of die hard roller racers left…

Still great though, think i still have a hangover today!

Next year we ride and we set up outside if the weether is as glorious as it was this year!
