Think it would have been better on the big screen with surround sound

I haven’t read the book(s) or seen any previous films.

    It is visually very lovely.

A bit ponderous though. Too much ‘Let’s hold the camera on the actor’s face and crank old Hans Zimmer up to 11 to REALLY EMPHASIZE this particular point’.

    +1

Saw it last night. Undoubtedly a very good film with plenty of visually inventive things to look at and a refreshing lack of Hollywood clichés.

But it did feel a little like a perfume advert at times.

And while the sound was great, I couldn’t hear what Paul was saying in some of the key scenes where there was a lot of background noise.

It did make me think how staggeringly awesome it would have been if Villeneuve had been given free rein with the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

I went last night with my Girls.

I had read the book as a Youth and was a fan of the original film, and thought this version was simply Epic more of a Lawrence of Arabia experience than the normal Hollywood action fodder churned out.

Both my Girls who had not read the book or knew what the plotline was about enjoyed the film, although I did have to answers question for 30 minutes afterwards about what had happened.
It will be an impatient wait until Part2 is filmed and released now.

Kind of agree with that, but one of the most refreshing things about Dune (for me) was the pacing. So nice to not feel rushed, but not sure you’d get away with that to the same extent with Star Wars

This may be heresy, but I did think Dune could have picked up the pacing a little bit here and there.

I’ve love to see Villeneuve do a Star Wars movie at something between Dune and normal Star Wars speed.

Or maybe just give him an epsiode of The Mandalorian’s next series to do what he wants with.

Just seen it tonight, hadn’t read the book or seen the old film.

i thought it was great, can see how some people might think it’s a bit slow, but I liked it. Defo one for watching in the cinema though, really liked the shakey camera effects and the seats rumbling from the low bass.

looking forward to the 2nd. Might read the book.

Aye so I sat up to stupid o’clock reading the first 50 pages or so of the book last night. i think the film is a brilliant reflection of the book so far at least.

Saw it the other day, really enjoyed it, Villeneuve really does open up the world, same thing he did with Blade Runner 2049, thought the pacing was good and was definitely worth going to the cinema for.

From what i saw it was definitely wise to do 2 parts, probably with a bit more director cut stuff, it gave us those little bits to understand more, like the Sardaukar, Sisterhood, etc.

The big thing is how long will part 2 be to fit it all in!

I’m all in for a 4 hour epic! 😆 back to back would accept 7 hours.

“Righty-ho, what shall we do to get the lads all fired up for the upcoming scrap with House Atreides?”

“Get them to stand about in the pissing rain while some blokes slowly work their way round smearing them with blood?”

“Liking it so far but it just needs that extra something”

“I know, we’ll have some geezer tell them ‘dreams are messages from the deep’ while they’re standing about”

“Spot on. And that’s why the Sardaukar are invincible”

I thought it was stunning. Proper adult sci if which didn’t feel the need for loads of exposition. I’ve not read it since I was a teen but seemed true to the story and visualised in a way that felt right to me

    Harry Potter: Desert Storm.

The sound design was very poor and I agree with Chapaking’s perfume advert comment. Read the first book ages ago, didn’t hate it but it’s not that interesting really.

Another nice little detail I spotted that was kind of in the book (implied I think); if you fire up argee’s YT video, and go to 11 seconds in- the figures daubing blood on new Sardaukar are BG.

The Missionaria Protectiva get everywhere 🙂

    Well I absolutely loved it

(caveat I’m a huge fan of the books – the first 6 anyway- & the lynch film)

It looked glorious, sound was a bit overbearing in places (clichéd desert/Arabic female singing) but I had no problem with hearing what was said

Atredies were all superbly cast, leads were great
Leto , Paul, gurney, Duncan, Jessica, didn’t see much mentat action not sure about thufir

Was unsure about Keynes, but ended up liking the switch

Batusta was great as Drax/Raban, but as with harkonens in general 12 rating prevented them from being too horrific
Skarsgard seemed to be channeling Brando/colonel Kurtz
Liked Peter devries, but not much screen time but no one is Brad Dourif

Salusa Secundus and the sardaukar were brilliant, getting some strong warhammer 40k vibes

Did I say it looked gorgeous?

No way did it feel as long as it runs, I’d love to have seen more

Infact I’m gutted I have to wait 2? years to see the sequel and I’m sad that I’ll never see Villeneuves vision of the later books: the Bene Tleilax or the Ixians
But excited to see what the Navigators & lovely Feyd are like

Read the books. Really love the Lynch movie. (The US edit is almost funny)

For me this remake was average and frustrating. So much character development lost with too much time spent on watching a girl walk in the sand. A dumbing down – Hollywood pap.

Feyd-Rautha won’t be in the sequel. This version has (sensibly) dispensed with him and focused on Rabban instead. On re-reading the book it really struck me how little Rabban is actually involved in the action, he’s mostly mentioned by other characters talking about him off doing this or that. In this movie he’s front and centre as an antagonist and it works a lot better movie-wise in my opinion.

I really enjoyed it as entertainment.

Matrix and Ghostbusters reboots next (how good does Carrie Anne Moss look?)

Watched it last night at home with a mate.

Neither of us had read the books, and we sort of remembered the one with Sting in it, but our memories were so vague that we could have well been remembering scenes from Flash Gordon or Star Trek Wrath of Khan.

I enjoyed it a lot, it was handy having a 2nd person to help follow the plot, like others have said, the sound was hard for my middle-aged ears to separate the dialog from Hanz Zimmerman.

There’s not a lot of story crammed into 2.5 hours, but it flew by.

I might watch it again in a couple of months, I’m sure I missed loads of it.

I think this reflects my thoughts too.

Definitely seems to have got a more-enthusiastic reception from the fans than from neutrals.

I did definitely enjoy it, but having then gone back to the David Lynch version it’s not really a patch on it. Somehow the original managed to get more in about the actual story than the new one which had twice as much time to tell us but somehow managed not to. Most of the characters are so much more bland in the new version.

    I loved it.
I’m a big sci fi fan but have never read Dune and only remember patches of the Lynch film so came in fresh.

I like the pacing, grand sci fi needs room to breathe.
Here’s hoping for more than just 1 sequel.

Heighliner? Fly your ships in, guild navigator gets wasted on spice & folds space. Before you know it you’re a million miles from where you started.

You could argue the rain was to deliberately contrast with the desert they would be going to…

I was a bit disappointed that we didn’t get to see DV’s interpretation of what a guild navigator would look like,  I know they’re not “central” to the story but it would’ve been cool to see.

salus secundus is supposed to be the imperial prison planet, the conditions are so harsh and brutal that they produce warriors as tough as the fremen who live on their own harsh brutal planet

A bit confusing this, during the sequence on Caladan where they hand over power to the Atredies, there are 5 humanoids in big robes & glass helmets filled with orange gas. When I saw it first I thought these were the Navigators, but the Emperor’s herald chap says the party has 3 representatives from the Guild of Navigators with it. So maybe these 5 are trainee navigators and the 3 main ones are up in the heighliner still, having been completely mutated from the Spice and unable to walk about any more.

Disappointed. It was not up to the standard of the Blade Runner sequel or Arrival. Too much dwelling on billowing in the wind and the sound/score is a bit generic and samey, like it was produced from one sample pack in a copy and paste that’ll do manner.

    saw it last night,

don’t watch in a odeon, if its like the odeon near me, the film ends up with black bars top and bottom. What happened to the days when the cinema screen would change ratio to fit the film. I found it very distracting.

as for the film, it was enjoyable, but felt like a trailer stretched out to film length. Very little character development for any characters other than the protagonist.

Went to see it again and still enjoyed it….but…having read the book,I would have had them spend a bit more time on how important preserving and reclaiming water is to the Fremen, they could have added some details of that in to Paul’s fight with Jamis.
When Paul and his mother are lost in the dessert,in the book this is a big change in power between them and she starts to fear what he will become. They just skipped over this in the film.
Finally, the Baron is a cruel, scheming and manipulative monster, they could have used some of the sand gazing time to build this up a bit more.
As said already,a mini series would probably be the only way to get all the detail in.
Will be interesting to see where part 2 goes.
