    That’s quite a wide question!

I don’t generally listen to a lot of singer/songwriter music, but certain female singers stood out and consequently found their way into my playlist/heart.

    Nina Simone
    P J Harvey
    Yukimi Nagano
    Marissa Nadler
    Patti Smith
    Carole King
    Joni Mitchell
    Ella Fitzgerald
    Emmylou Harris
    Josephine Foster
    Kate Bush
    Stella Vander
    Tracy Chapman
    Betty Davis

With the caveat that it sounds good but not amazing on a typical cheapo sounddock/iphone or whatever, but get Alison Krauss onto a proper hi-fi and WOW, that girl can sing!

Not seen St Vincent mentioned yet….

Should have done my list one above the other, easier to read, didn’t want to take up too much space.
St Vincent is there, as is Sea Of Bees, and Thea Gilmore, who’s done an album of Sandy Denny songs at the request of Sandy’s estate. She left some unfinished songs and lyrics, so Thea and her husband Nigel were asked to finish them, do arrangements and record them, released as the album Keep On Singing: The Songs Of Sandy Denny
    Beautiful album, too.
