Having recently been lucky enough to move to our own house with a garage at the end of the garden I would like to have internet down there.

We have a Virgin Hub 3 in the kitchen and the previous owner used the garage as a home office so he ran an ethernet cable from the location of the Virgin Hub in the kitchen down the garden and into the garage. This run of cable is around 150m or so.

So far so good. What piece of kit am I looking for to plug that ethernet cable into in the garage to get WiFi down there? I’m sure this should be easy but I don’t want to waste cash getting the wrong thing. The WiFi from the house is really weak down there so just looking to get a strong signal. It’ll be used with phone, tablet and laptop occasionally.

I’d like it to be ‘plug and play’ but can change settings etc if need be.

Please advise o’ wise IT types of STW (most of you I imagine 😆 ). Links to suitable solutions would be much appreciated. My Googlefu is failing today…

    Cheers, Paul

Dig a trench, put some external cat5e in conduit in it, plug one end directly in to the router, and the other end into either a proper wireless access point, or an old router with DHCP turned off 🙂

You need a “wireless access point” on the end of the Ethernet cable in the garage.

Change the default password on the device, add a password to the wireless access.

You just need a wireless access point.

This run of cable is around 150m or so.

It’ll probably work, but that’s exceeding CAT5 specs – maximum cable length of a single run is (just under) 100m.

sorry, I assumed that the OP already had the CAat5 in place and the previous owner had used it successfully?

You can get those electrical plug adapter thingy’s from Maplins. You plug one end in the house and attach to router and then plug another in the garage. It uses your electrical supply to send from one to the other. Apologies if not use correct terminology, not IT savvy. This is what I’ve got and it works perfectly. Believe me, if I can set it up, you can!!

Homeplug type things are great if everything’s on the same circuit, however, if they have to go through a consumer unit, then in my experience, they either won’t work at all, or they’ll be really sketchy at best.

As said 150m is technically a fair way over the spec limit, but it’s worked fine for me in the past with decent solid core cable.
Just don’t expect to be able to run gigabit over it (which again, you technically can’t with Cat5e, but in reality often can)

    Cheers peeps.

    So, something like this:

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/tp-link-tl-wa801nd-n300-wireless-n-access-point-n45ql

Looking out of the window, 150m is maybe optimistic. The previous owner had it working so must be doable. One way to find out.

You don’t know the half of it and the other half you don’t want to know 😉

It was an overestimation I think. As a guy its something I all too frequently do… 😆

I had one of those t-link things and it was fine. I extended my wired network and put another hub in, move the Wireless Access Point to there and after that it kept crashing the Virgin router (so much so they provided a replacement box as they thought it was a router fault). Moved it back to the original hub and it was fine.
So, I would say as long as the wire to the garage is directly into the back of the access point you’ll be fine.

wwaswas – yep, wire to the garage is going straight into the Virgin Hub 3 access point in the kitchen and t’other end will plug straight into the TP Link WAP.

150m between house and garage? Worst “I live in a country manor house” thread ever! 😆

Is there electric in the garage? Never owned them, but I’m aware of those interweb gizmos that use the electric supply to spread the interweb goodness around the home.

You can get WiFi repeaters that only require a power socket to work. I’d maybe look into that, and sack off the ethernet cable.

We have one of these, works great.

Busted… But its only 2 streets away! I thought I’d thrown you all with judicious use of ‘garden’. Its like a public garden aka a park! 😆

Yeah, there is electricity down there but I thought seeing as the previous owner ran CAT5 down there I’d use that.

Yes you can. Old CAT5 is 100mbps, but CAT5e is 1000bps (that’s what the ‘e’ means).

The OP probably won’t get gigabit working reliably here, but that’s down to the length of the cable rather than the cable type.

Do you need wireless in the porn den garage? If not plug the Ethernet cable into the PC.

If not plug the Ethernet cable into the PC.

I thought that at first, but then realised porn browsing is better on an iPad.

I’d like wireless so that I have the option of which device I use, rather than being tied in to the laptop (plus taking my laptop to the garage every time).

Do they still make these, thought they’d canned the wireless router range?

I did exactly this, ran an ethernet cable down to the garage (only 70m in my case) and used an old router as a wireless access point. Working perfectly so far…

    They do

    https://www.apple.com/uk/airport-express/

That said, as pypdjl says, one could just use any old wireless router.

Hmmm my Belkin olug was delivered today. Yes it works, im about to Zwift in the mancave. However, internet in the rest of the house now feels slower…

I’ve got a belkin plug in extender thingy. It does extend the range, but it seems to confuse devices when they can see both it and the main router. I keep it turned off unless I need it.

I’m a bit disappointed with it tbh, but I think I’d dislike the power wasted by two powerline extender devices on all the time more.

    I’ve sussed out mine.

It does extend the range well, but only at 2.86mbps. This however is enough for me to be zwifting in the mancave. I’ll be switching it off when I don’t need it therefore back to 36mbps…

OK, still selling the old designs. The wireless dept has been canned.
