Thinking of ditching the car and picking up an eBike for the commute to work. I work from three locations. One in the same town that I live in and then 11 and 13 miles away. I’d try and stick to backroads and the Middlewood Way or Macc to Marple canal where possible.

Looking at the Genesis Smithfield eBike as an option. Not a massive fan of drops or road bikes in general. Thought this looked like a good bet for a commuter. Any owners in the house?

I’m sorry to report that I’m not a Smithfield owner.  But I do commute on a hybrid ebike, so here’s my thoughts –

    It looks pretty cool

23kg is reasonably weighty as these things go. My Cannondale is about 17kg and the Ribble Hybrid is in that ballpark too. However, it’s got a bigger battery than either of those.

That 400w battery should be good for at least 30 miles if you have it on full power the entire time. Realistically, if you’re prepared to actually pedal a bit, you can probably expect double that.

It’s got a BB mounted motor (rather than a rear wheel motor) which, as I understand it, offers more power, but since that power then goes through the drivetrain, you put more wear on the chain etc. So might cost a bit more to run, but handy if you have particularly steep hills.

Feels a smidge expensive at £3k IMO, but not dramatically so.

Other stuff I’d look at, if you haven’t already – the Ribble Hybrid, the Specialized Turbo Vado 4.0 SL which looks pretty good value at £2500, the Raleigh Trace which is currently on offer and seems a bit of a snip at £1800, and Temple Cycles have a sale on at the mo, and I really like the look of their electric bike too.

    Happy shopping 🙂
