  • Gear cable outer?

I’ve opened a pack of Shimano road bike gear cables. I was surprised to find the outer was wound like brake cable outer rather than strands running the length of the outer.
This is the second time I’ve found outer like this. The previous pack was another brand. I assumed it was a packing error at the factory.

    Has outer changed recently?

OP has bought gear cable outer which (unexpectedly) has the wire strands wound concentrically like this:

..whereas most gear cable outers are wound in a more linear fashion like this:

Brake cables tend to be made as per the first picture because it is more resistant to deformation / bulging from the inner cable (which is under higher prolonged tension than gear inner).

SP41 is linier cable isn’t it?
Sure you haven’t got brake cable by mistake?

Ooh thanks for the heads up. I’m just going to check what went in my bike the other day before I rebuilt the back end and before I start to put a new drivetrain on. It was a pita to thread it so I’d rather redo it now while it’s still clean!

To ensure I never have this problem again I bought a 50 metre box of SP41.

Go on how much? I couldn’t find any for £ I liked so went for 10m worth of grey from SJS.

I bought a box of 100 Jagwire Slick Stainless. It’s hard to imagine using them all but I’m coming close to finishing a second 50m box of SP41.

For future reference buy boxed 50m sp41 from R2-bike then you can sell some 5m or 10m lengths on eBay, that way you’ll end up paying less than a pound a metre for your own outer.
